 Monthly Chat Thread ~ August
« Thread Started on Aug 2, 2012, 4:03am »

You are a lazy lot. It's already the 2nd of August, tsk tsk! So, why is everyone so quiet? Has there been some huge natural disaster, or a horrid catastrophic event I've missed hearing about? Or is everyone just glued to the Olympics?

Many of our members are from the UK or USA and this is summer holidays period for most - so I imagine a few of the regulars could be on holiday (or struggling to entertain the kids at home!) I don't really do holidays away but I have been helping both my mum and my sister move house over the past couple of weeks which has keept me away from the computer.

And I'm very excited to be off to the Olympic football ladies quarter final in Cardiff this afternoon - Brazil, one of the best teams, against Japan. Off to see the men tomorrow evening too - Team GB(!) v South Korea. I have been watching a fair bit on the telly - it's very easy to get drawn into it! But I have to admit to getting a bit bored now, they keep showing the same stuff over and again, especially when we Brits win something!

How's everyone else doing?

It has been very quiet, so I figured everyone is getting their vacations out of the way. I've had a slow week of no good nights sleep, so slow days. Hub hasn't been much better. It's been first one awake in the morning wakes the other one, which is pretty bad for us! Really looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow!

We had a few really nice days of balmy weather and cool nights. Nice to open the windows and air out the place again. Back to steam heat through the weekend, so a/c is cranking, and all windows closed! August is here!!!

Hub's birthday was Wednesday. Because it was hot, I tried not to cook. Waste of time, as I ended up not finding much that I wanted, and having to cook anyway. But he had his favorite, spaghetti and meatballs, so he was happy. I bought a beautiful strawberry cheesecake, but he was too full to eat it. Had daughter and granddaughter down yesterday, so we made a good dent in the cheesecake! They are coming down tomorrow for a more official birthday meal, so we will go out to eat. We finished all the leftovers last night, and I'm not cooking!!!

Thanks again anaira, glad we have you on the case when we're all slacking!

How was the football weesilvie? Did you manage to be prepared for everything without taking a bag?!

We haven't seen too much of the Olympics as we've been away but it sounds like team GB is doing pretty well! And not much of the transport misery forecast too - I have friends down in London who had been told to allow an extra hour to get to and from work during the games, but it seems so many people have been scared off going in to London that it's actually quieter than usual!

3piggles, that food sounds gorgeous - hope you all enjoy your meal out.

The cheesecake cost $30, so I was totally prepared for it not to be worth the money. It was soooo worth the money!!! Daughter and granddaughter helped us finish the spaghetti and meatballs, so saved hub from having to gorge himself repeatedly! :-/

Yesterday we did his official birthday dinner at his favorite sea food restaurant, with daughter and granddaughter. I think he had a good birthday just getting to play with granddaughter twice in one week!

Daughter brought some fabulous, professional pictures of granddaughter, which hub scanned and printed on regular 8.5x11 printer paper. We mounted them on a mirror in the living room, as it has a light. Looks incredible. I will try to get a picture of it, as those pictures aren't on my computer.

Still haven't made the pillow case for my wonderful new pillow. It barely fits a regular pillow case, and when I lay my head on it, it has no placed to go to conform. I bought fabric almost the color of the sheets, but figuring out how to make a pillow case that was big enough when I needed, and no all floppy and ugly the rest of the time, has been a challenge. I'm thinking in need some kind of elastic panel, and may go back to the fabric store to see what's available. For now, the fabric is wrapped around the pillow. Temporary pillow case!

Lots of distractions this weekend, so no work on the basement family room. We need to paint all the wooden trim, then call to get the carpeting installed. We did find some carpeting we like. I just need to check paint swatches against it before decide on one. We're going with Berber because it's durable, but also going with the wider weave because it's softer. Granddaughter has to be able to scoot her little ride-ons over the carpet, it needs to be soft under foot (going in the bedrooms, later) and it needs to withstand office furniture. We're not asking for too much!!!

Does it make the tea too?!

Carpets are a sore point with me today - the kids had a bunch of friends over yesterday and some of that awful slime putty stuff got left all over the cream carpets....

Is anyone glued to the Olympics? We've watched bits and pieces and are enjoying GB doing so well, especially for such a dinky country! Apparently there's a gold postbox up the road from us, so we might go and have a peek later (Royal Mail are painting a postbox gold in the hometown of every gold medalist).

Didn't know that about the gold postboxes!

I normally hate the olympics but kids been watching it and actually surprised how much I've enjoyed some of it. Son (he's a blue belt in taekwondo) was jumping around screaming his head off last night when Jade Jones got UK's first every gold in tkd.

We've been watching the soccer, men's and women's. Haven't watched anything else.

I know what you mean about carpet issues, but the family room is on a concrete slab in a room that's mostly underground. Open to the outside with door and large window on one end. It is the coldest room in the house, we think it was originally carpeted to warm and soften the floor. Because it only get natural light on one end, and is rather dark, we're going for an off-white background with specs of lots of colors. We will have carpet pads under the desk chairs, and there's a self-stick carpet cover to go where we will walk and the Peanut will run her wheelies. I'm concerned about the hay/poos that always escape from the piggy cage, but we won't eat anything down there that stains, so not worried about that.

The bits of colour will make all the difference with stopping any little marks showing up - good call!

We saw the highlights of the taekwondo - great that we won, and with Nicola Adams being the first woman to win an Olympic gold in boxing, it was a good night! It all seemed a bit kicky in the taekwondo though - why were arms not involved much?!

We saw one of the gold postboxes today - there was a big queue of people waiting to have their picture taken with it! There's another two a couple of miles in the other direction from us too, so if you're lucky, maybe I'll post a picture of those too?!

*gasp* Treen! You double posted! tsk tsk tsk.

Oh, it's summer in other parts of the world? Shaame! We have a sort of spring/autumn/winter hybrid going on here; and I rather like it. I much prefer cold over heat, and it isn't even that cold all the time. Some days are quite warm even. Probably means we'll have a rubbish summer, but I'm ok with that!

I haven't watched much of the Olympics; just mostly tuned in every now and again, to see us winning another medal. I must say, we are doing rather well. In the medal to population ratio, anyway!

all right, now that I've wandered on in, and posted my usual incoherent, slightly-vague ramble, I'll disappear for another week or so. ;P Nice seeing you guys, and try provide more entertainment for me next time! Maybe a nice little fight?

Well, if no one else will talk to you, you might as well talk to yourself, I say!

And as for fights, I think everyone's too busy to argue - but your big toes look fat in those shoes.

Did anyone manage to watch the closing ceremony? We started but nodded off - apparently it picked up later on though!

Talk to myself all the time, then think I told hub things he claims I never said, lol!

I think these were the best handled/broadcast Olympic games I've seen in years. Usually some network gets the broadcast rights and suspends all its regular broadcasts during the games. This time NBC bought the US rights, and created special channels to show the games. While most of the regular programming on all the networks was reruns, at least we had that option. We got to watch what we wanted, when we wanted.

I was thrilled for the underdogs that won or even got to play for the gold. I was disappointed in the bigots and dopers who spoiled the games for their people. Greece is struggling to hard to stay afloat, and so many athletes sacrificed to much to get to the games. Doping and bigotry just sully it for all of them.

I do think the UK has set a great example for how to conduct the games, manage the invasion of foreigners, transportation, security and everything. I hope Rio can rise to the occasion.

Good show all around. Glad it's over, though, so we can get back to some of our regular shows. US broadcasting is heading for the end of the summer shows, then a period of endless reruns and stupid reality shows so we'll be desperate when the fall shows start, lol!

Glad you approved, I did work jolly hard pulling it all together!

Don't forget the Paralympics start on the 29th of August - ticket sales are going pretty well and they reckon it could be the first Paralympics to sell out. My son is looking forward to watching wheelchair rugby (aka murderball - anyone seen that documentary?) and basketball.

Haha! Mind you, I have the opposite problem - I tell fella things and think he knows them, when really he was reading an email/ listening to the tv etc.
