And window boxes and such like. Time to start this year's garden thread. As the weather is so lovely and I have a day off, I've been out in mine. That is, until I unearthed a slowworm. Eeeuw! Reeeeally dont like anything resembling snakes.

Oh I'm jealous, I've never seen one (not that I wouldn't probably squeal like a pig and run away if I did!). Are they more common 'darn sarth' where it's a bit warmer?

I'm only assuming that's what it was as I'm not sure I've seen one in the flesh before either. Not sure if they're more common down south. It was light brown, about 1cm thick and up to a foot long. Not pretty! Don't think I squealed but I might have sworn and I definitely recoiled. That's me done with gardening until the bin men have been next week anyway as my green bin is now full so I'll leave him be and hope he goes away!

I love slowworms, it is a pity he wasn;t here LOL! I remember holidaying with my first husband and we were in Perranporth. He spotted something in the hedge and it was a slow worm and she was gorogeous. She didnt mind being handled so I thnik she may have been in captivity 'for part of her life and also, I think she was preggie. It took all my willpower to put her back.
I have the utmost respect for people who are afraid of these and their like and consider myself very lucky to be able to love them.
Hugs
JO xx

I am busy working my way round my garden and tidying it up; I been able to do much last autumn, so it is very much in need of a spring clean! I also lost two shrubs to the combination of drought and cold spell and needed to replant those big empty patches until new shrubs can regrow. One of them was sadly my beloved rock rose (cistus).

I'm really looking forward to planting and growing some stuff but I too have a pretty monumental tidying job to do first. Took me two hours this morning to fill up the green wheelie bin (for garden waste)!

The tidy up has started here too. The buttercup has been weedkilled that has taken over the flower bed during the winter. The greenhouse has been cleared and the veg patch dug over. Awful lot of weeding to do but have some bulbs and seeds waiting to go in so need to get on with it. I've been eyeing up some red stem and some black stem bamboo to cover the steep, high bank at the back of my house.

I've never heard of a slow worm, so I googled it and they do look like little snakes! Not what I was expecting. We found a hornworm (a brown one, not the green) in our yard last year and it caused quite a commotion with the kids. I had never seen one, so I didn't even know what it was.

I bought two packets of mixed Marigold seeds, and hope to get them in the starter flats this weekend. Need to get everything out of storage, and see if I need to buy anything like starter soil mix. Marigolds help fight biting bugs, so I like to plant them around exterior doors and on my porch railings. I hope to get a big enough healthy batch to do all those places, this year.
