Thanks KJ, Penny is tearing my tv guide as I'm typing lol

Thumper has learnt a new trick. While out of her home, she keeps popping back in and sitting next to the food bowl and looking at either Kathy or me , pleading for her pellets with her lovely eyes. Will have to update Thumpers page about her new trick lol

I have some upsetting news about our dear Thumper. Sorry I'm only just mentioning it now on the forum but I've been so upset and emotionally drained.

Thumper suddenly lost the use of her hind legs on Monday. I just can't believe this has happened to her. Kathy my daughter had her out in the early hours of the monday morning and she was running around just fine and all Sunday too. John and I was up early at 5am and she was sitting upright just fine in her cage. I went to bed for a little while after John left for work, then afterwards Jenna came in to say Thumper is dragging her legs, this was just gone 8oclock.
I'm heartbroken this has happened to Thumper and Kathy especially has been so very upset.

We went by taxi and arrived at the vets around 9.30. Thumper was sedated and had an x-ray and blood tests, the blood results should be back next week. The x-ray revealed that one of her disc space was narrow compared to the others so that might be the cause. She can move her legs a little but just can't support her weight.

To be honest, I wasn't sure if Thumper would be coming home as I thought she'd fractured her spine or something, well you think all sorts don't you. She was able to come back home and is on a high dose of Metacam. The vet said if things are going to improve, it might take two to three weeks. I was asked if her cage bedding was disturbed and it wasn't but I imagine that might not rule out a seizure/stroke.

Thumper is eating which is good but because she can't move her rear, she has been getting in a mess, especially the urine on her fur.Coping with the urine on her fur is the hardest part of her care. She is now on vetbed which is really helping. Thumper also had a bottom dip which I'll now do everyday. She is too big for the sink so I used an old guinea cage base. She is now getting used to a hairdryer.

She is eating her Cecal droppings when Kathy or I catch them coming.

I just can't believe this has happened and just feel so upset for Thumper and Kathy.

Kathy is helping such alot with Thumps care and trying to keep Thumpers spirits up, Thumps still loves her cuddles and attention. We are both looking like Zombies at times due to broken sleep but we are coping.

This page has helped. http://www.mybunny.org/info/paralyzed.htm but am searching for as much info as I can.

Its very hard seeing a once very active, healthy rabbit being so imobile, she has been with us for nearly 7 years and I really hope our darling Thumper improves :-*

You know I'm keeping everything crossed for Thumper (and you and Kathy). I really hope she gets the feeling/mobility back. Hope the disabled rabbit group can help and will be anxiously thinking of you all.

Oh Jackie, this is such terrible news! I am so sorry this has happened to Thumper. I was reading the information in the link you posted and it just makes me so sad for Thumper and your family. My heart goes out to you. Thumper is in my thoughts and prayers and hopefully you will see signs of improvement over the next few weeks to come. :-*

Thank you everyone.

I have now had the blood results back and will find out even more about the results today but Thumper tested positive for Encephalitozoon Cuniculi -
E-Cuniculi for short. The percentage of rabbits that do carry EC can be high but EC may only affect a small number of rabbits and the symptoms that Thumper is showing means it might have become 'active' maybe due to her immune system being lowered or her age.

Molly Varga, the vet I used to see until she moved has written a page about it.

http://www.uk-pet-rabbits.4t.com/about.html
Another section about EC is on this page.
http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=490&S=5tg

Had I known about EC and the affects it can have on rabbits, even if the percentage is small, I would have mentioned it to my vet. I don't think vets routinely treat rabbits (as a precaution) because most aren't affected. Penny is also going to be treated as they did use the same area's for free ranging and it can be passed on in urine via spores. She'll also have a blood test to see if it comes back positive. I have also been worried about my guinea pigs, a nurse said Guinea pigs don't get it but want to ask the vet about that.

My good friend Ros who has always been so helpful and I call her my 'rabbit friend' said that I may see improvents in Thumper during/after treatment which lasts a month. I really do hope and pray we do.

I'm asking about how to extract urine from Thumper at regular intervals as I believe that can be done and they'll show us how to shave Thumpers thick long fur as it all helps to keep her clean and sore free. After her daily bath, she is wet through again when she passes urine within the hour.

I'll let you know how I get on at the vets and thanks again for all your support for our dear Thumper

Oh Jackie, I'm so sorry you have all this worry with Thumper. It must be so difficult seeing her having these problems, especially given how active she normally is. I shall certainly keep everything crossed here - it's positive news that the cause of her hind leg weakness has been identified, and I hope you see some improvements once treatment starts. You and Kathy are doing an amazing job taking care of Thumper's needs, and I'm pleased to hear that she still has a good appetite. I'll be rooting for Thumper and good luck at the vets xxx

I'm sorry to hear the test came back positive but at the same time at least knowing what it is means it can be treated and hopefully Thumper can make a complete recovery. We are all rooting for her here. x
