Well a little update on the girls, After being away for the weekend I came back to a very messy cage, (won't be asking that friend to look after them again). While I was away I went to a bigger rangee store in the midlands and found some ideal grids to make a new bigger cage for them. Needless to say it was too big for my lounge as a cage at the minute so just using the grids to make an extension for them for a few hours every evening so they can have a good run around without causing havoc to my lounge! As soon as we get a bigger place the grids will be used. They seem happy for now. Attachments:

Just a silly idea: what about hanging the pics on the walls, using the cabinet in the corner as a base, put a wooden board on top and use eye screws and zip ties to connect the grids to? It would make better use of the lounge.

Those look like good grids but it's so hard to get anything like them over her. What was the name of the shop you got them in?

I know, i saw someone walking past in the store with some grids and i went on a mad hunt to find where they were coming from. The store I got it from was "The range" they not have any in NI but i did have a look and do deliver i think, but cant seem to find the grids on the web page, Its the closest thing i have found to C & C over in the UK. We have a local range and they did not have them there, luckily went into a store in the West Midlands and saw them there

I'll keep an eye on their website. I have plenty of grids at the moment as bought a couple of packs from ebay but it's always good to know where they can be sourced and those look larger so less connections needed. Thanks.

Those white grids look huge. How big are they. I know different companies make them different sizes.
I like KJ's idea. Hub would probable be totally surprised to come home to a totally rearranged lounge, lol!!!
Ask him if he'll send some of his caring about animals over to my hub!!! He likes the pigs okay, but he's just not a big animals lover.

The grids are rather huge, they are 60cm (2ft) by 90cm (3ft), Only need seven to make their cage. I was think about KJ's idea but the top of the cabinet is too small for four piggies. I am luck with my other half as he had piggies as a kid and loves them he is the one that got me into them now I am worse than him! Don't think he would be pleased to come home to a rearranged lounge after I crashed his car the other day whoops!

Lol, we can't help you about crashing the car!!! You'll have to face that one yourself, lol. Those are big grids. I don't think I've seen anything like that around here!!!

Hi, I am having some issues and wondering if anyone could help, obviously I give my girls unlimited hay, but soo much is wasted as they pull it on to the floor and it is where they poo so they dont eat it and I clean it up on a daily basis. I have tried moving thr racks to the other side of the cage but they just poo there. Over half of what I am giving them goes straight into the bin the next day. I seem to be going through hay like nothing at the minute. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can give them hay so it is not all left on the floor of their cage?

What sort of hay rack do you use? I find that some types allow them to pull a big pile of hay out at once and then they tend to trample, pee and poo in some it so don't eat it. Some of the other hay racks confine the hay better so that less likely to come out en masse.

I use a kitty litter box with doors cut in each end. It holds the hay and poos and keeps the cage a lot cleaner. Hay doesn't keep it's nutrients or taste very long after being exposed to air, so any hay they don't eat one day won't be that great for eating the next day. There is just a lot of waste with hay whether they mess in it or it just loses its taste.
Mine love burrowing in the hay, tossing it around, etc. that after several attempts at hay racks, I gave up and did the litter box. I put kitty litter in the bottom of the box, so when I remove the used hay, I clean out the litter, too. It keeps their feet dry.

It is just a rack that I clip onto the outside of the cage, it is quite a short hay so thinking that may be an issue, I was thinking of using a little tray but dont really want to limit the floor space of their cage until I can get a bigger one. Although thinking i may have to give it a try

Peed on hay makes great compost, so get yourself a compost bin to put it in, if you have a garden, or find some friends with compost bins you can donate it to!

That's the one I was going to suggest: because of the soft material, it's most likely to prevent big chunks being tugged out.
I use a hay pile. It gets hay mined, pee and pooped upon, tossed and turned, moved, nested, trenches being dug, you name it, lol.

I love the hay hammock from Jen's. I just felt so badly every time I took away their hay pile to make clean up easier or to use less hay, I always broke down and put the hay pile back. Their reactions were so great, it's been worth the waste and extra clean up. Having doors cut in each end of the litter box makes it a pass-through hay box, so while they can't push pigloos through it, my girls run through, chase each other in and out of the box through the doors, etc. I also surround it with paver bricks for them to walk across and wear down their nails. In the past I have built hay racks out of extra grids. You could build one to go overhead, not too high, so the pigs go under the grid platform that holds the hay, and pull it down. You won't waste as much hay that way unless they start jumping up into the hay, which LG did. Here are some pics of the overhead hay loft. I could have kept LG out by putting a grid on the front. wheekers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pigchat&action=display&thread=3395&page=1

Ooo I like that hay hammock, just kind of expensive but it looks like it would be a pain to make so the cost might be worth it. I'd like to try that because I feel like I waste a lot of hay as well! Would you recommend the single or the double?
