I have 4 pigs in two groups. Let me introduce you to them ;D Group 1 lives at my parents home, because there is my granny- pig. Andromeda (or Rommie) is about 9 years old (or 10) and she doesn't like long driving (from my parents home to my university are 250km). So she spend her evening of live with my castrated male Moritz. Unfortunatly it turned out, that she has a malignant tumor at the lower jaw, which grows and grows and grows. But she's still very happy and calls with earsplitting roar for supper ;D Mortiz is about 3 years old by now. I got him from an animal shelter (they said he was about a 3/4 year old, but I think he was a little bit younger, maybe a half year old). He is very shy, but nothing at all very foolish (like popcorning in cuddlebags or doing funny things with the cage inventar ;D ) My other group contains of two brawlers ^^ Sometimes I think I'm present at the fight of the two queens Brunhild and Kriemhild of the Nibelungen- Saga. The one queen ist Ink (or Inky), named because of her big black spot on her nose. She is a very sweet piggy, looking a little bit like a dust bunny xP But she's very insidious, she hate beeing cuddled. Than she twitches and bites (nasty little thing ^^). Ink is now about nearly two years old. I got her from a private rescue, when she was half a baby ;D The other queen (and my biggest piggy) is Trine. She's the pig on my avatar ^^ I got Trine, when I must seperated Ink of Rommie and Moritz because Rommie got very sick (dirrhea; she lost about 100g in one week) and then Ink begun attacking my old girl. I don't know how old Trine is, propably about three or four years. I got her also from a private rescue. Trine is very talented and veeeeeery clever. She learns new tricks very fast (so she can circle, stand up, kiss, fetching a kind of wood and rolling the snackyball). Ink is also very talented. She can circle, stand up and kiss ^^ Granny Andromeda (with a piece of Moritz) Moritz (after I woke him up ) Rommie and Moritz two years ago Trine (one of my favourite pictures; it's her view when she wants something to eat xP) Ink last summer with long hair both queens together

Welcome to the forum!
I love your piggies. Rommie is very old for a guinea pig. I hope that she can be around for a bit longer yet before the tumor bcomes too bad. Moritz looks very endearing and Trine has all the demeanor of a proper queen, hasn't she? Inky is just stunning!!! But I must admit that I have a very soft spot for coronets.
It's great to have another member with rescue piggies! Mine are all rescues as well. Sadly, it is not easy to get hold of rescue piggies in some countries!

Thanks to all ^^
Yes, Trine is veeeeery proper *chrm* Tomorrow I will drive home to my parents, and I'm frigthening how the tumor does (but my parents didn't say anything negative, so I hope my granny will experience the new year)
Actually Inky is no clear coronet; her father was 'only' a crested, and her brother is shorthaired, too. But fortunatly she is simliar to her coronet- mother ^^
In Germany it's easy to get rescue pigs. Animalshelter and rescuestations are all over the country, you must just find them ^^

They are adorable!!! I love Trine as lookout pig, yo, feed me!!! lol!!!
I've heard that some European forums say it's fine to keep pigs alone, keep them in tiny cages, not give them any human contact. I'm so glad that's not how you are doing it. You definitely love your piggies!!!

The German rescue friendly forums are actually insisting on even more space than our minimum recommendations! There are at least one two good and friendly ones.
But there are people who insist that you have to leave your piggies to live a "natural" life. Which I think is a bit illusionary since the domestic piggies ARE pets. My roaming Tribe is living a happy piggy life, but the pigs still get cuddles - after all, you will never notice illness and weight loss early on if you do not handle your piggies regularly.
It is similar with British rescues - the internet is actually helping them to slowly build up a community and provides better access to finding them. Lots come and go after only a fairly short time for various reasons, often lack of money/funding. But compared to the US, we have a veritable crowd of rescues!!! It is still not easy to find good enough homes, though...
Sending my vibes to your "granny". I really hope that she can make it and that you won't get stuck in all that horrible snow and public transport desaster you're having!

Yes, there are a few extreme people (for example, i don't weight the vegetables for them to the specified amount of 100gr á pig, but some members do and dare if they know you don't. Than you're veeery evil ;D ), but the most members are very nice black sheeps are every where ^^ Thanks for the vibes; the tumor didn't grow more, but I think it was open, because of the scab... I think I must help her packing her bags in a little while But she is fit (ok, she sleeps much, but thats normal for old pets), she squeks for food, she eat very much and I really don't know how I should decide

BIG HUG!
You will know when the time has come - Rommie will tell you. It is never easy to let a piggy go; all you can give them is your love and care to the best of your abilities and be there for them as much as you can. Enjoy the time you've got with her; it's precious!

I think the best you can do is finally decide if she is suffering too much. If they are enjoying life, let them take a natural course. Sad that we have to be on guard with our emotions as they get older, always prepared for the worst and hoping for the best.
Glad the tumor seems to be sorting itself out. Hope it isn't giving her a lot of trouble.
I agree, Yodelpig. I have happy, popcorning piggies. They have a good life, good food, safety, comfort and love, a whole room to play in for floor time, and someone to watch for any signs of ill health. If they roamed free in an enclosure, it would be hard to interact/socialize with them, and to check on them. Try chasing pigs around a huge enclosure to get their weight!!!
Mulle, pigs vary so much in size all diet specifications can only be guidelines. We say pigs should get 1/8-1/4 cups of pellets per day. One is twice the other amount, which would seem extreme if we said no pig gets more than 1/8 cup per day. My morty is twice the size of my Mia, and I don't think he'd like being fed the same size diet she might eat. The idea is to feed them enough healthy foods without overdoing it and making them fat or giving them mushy poos. Sounds as if you are doing that just fine!!!

So, I'm back at univeristy and Rommie is still living. I said to my parents that I can't euthanise her, when she is still full of live. So, they will have an eye on her, and when she's suffering, they will take her to the vet. Sadly I have no cuddle- like pigs If I cuddle Ink, she bites all she can get (fingers, arm, shirt), Trine is ok, but I see that she don't like it (than her eyes become very huge and frightend). But most of the time she allows cuddling in the cage last time she layed herself down and slept a little bit when I stroke her Moritz is kind of Trine, but more frightend. When I take him out of the cage he squeeks like going to the shambles *head on desk* Oh, Rommie likes cuddling and her former best girlfriend Mulle (one of my favourite guineapigs; sadly she died in January 2009) was a very cuddly piggie. Also my first two guineapigs Quietschy and Bärchen liked cuddling. They all slept in this croissant- form on my lap ;D Yesterday Ink had her five minutes when she raced through the cage. This is funny, I like it (especially since I haven't cut her fur last month and now she really looks like an exploded pillow ) A few pictures of this little fur- bomb

I'm glad Rommie is still enjoying life. You pigs may still sort out to find one is a snuggler. It also tends to change if one needs help/meds, etc., as that becomes a special bonding experience. They do know when we're trying to help, even if they don't always show it.
My two best snuggle piggies are gone, and for now, I don't have one, either. I am getting the girls used to being picked up and cuddled, and they are adapting. Morty will snuggle, but would rather play.

It has been a long long time since I wrote here last time, but I was burried in work and learning for university...
First sad news: Rommie went over the rainbowbridge at third march. The tumor became to big and I didn't want that she suffers.
The socialisation of Trine, Ink and Moritz was a real fight. Poor boy got the flogging of his life of Trine. First they were only a fuzzy sqeeking ball which rolled through the cage. But now they' re a nice trio. This weekend they were the first time outside, eating gras in enormous speed ;D I will take photos the next time ^^
