Thanks for the links piggylove and curlybear! And for the cute photos of your rats Erin and curlybear. Looks like I'm the last one discovering rat appeal! Also I'm glad to know what a hooded rat is - I was wondering what the hooded bit referred to...!
Good luck Jo!

You know how rat cages are taller so they can climb? Well, I was just wondering if there was a tendency to get a bit of wee spray on the walls/ soft furnishings that were near the cage, or if they generally go on the bottom layer of the cage?! Just thinking about potential cage placement (not that I'm ready to make a move yet) and I remember someone saying this happened with their chinchillas!

I don't know about ratties, but pigs seem to manage to overspray the coroplast bumper, quite easily. It seems as if a lot of animals spray to scent mark, too. I hope you get your question answered. I would have some kind of barrier, just to be safe!

Yeah, good point - I remember the girls overshooting the cage side occasionally, usually when sending a 'get stuffed' message to an over-amorous male!

*laughs hysterically* Bane of my life, silly rats. Yeah, although boys are worse than girls; I swear they aim. I quite like having deep-ish pans for levels, and some cages come with them, but otherwise; corner trays on each level helps. Also, do not have curtains near the cage. You would be surprised at how far their little hands can grab. Then something like a shower curtain/plastic tablecloths taped over the wall, and across the carpet. Or even coroplast. For easy sweeping, and wiping.
Oh, and cages don't necessarily have to be too tall, I quite like having a bit of horizontal space, too. Especially for when they get older.
Typical Treen, last in on everything. If you look at the Dapper rat site, I think it has a list of the varieties on there, so you can see. Now, find out what a berkshire is, and report back!

Why, it's a solid coloured rat with a white belly, and usually with white feet and white tail tip! They are growing on me as I look at photos! I'm not really sure where we'd keep the cage yet though - all the suitable spaces (I don't think I could get anything with a second level into where the pig cage was) are too close to soft furnishings and I'm not sure I want shower curtains taped around in the living room?! Although after watching this video, I think I'd like mice! www.youtube.com/user/MouseAgility

Ha! It'd be one way to do it, but I don't think I'd have gone out to places like pubs much if that's how people were communicating - far too messy!

What else can we talk about now to spice up our life because I don't know much about rats . Little mouse would be good. We had a field mouse in our kitchen cupboard. One night my grandaughter and I left it jelly sweets. They were all gone in the morning. My hubby was going mad because he was trying to get rid of it and we were encouraging the wee thing to visit. Poor wee mousey, he got caught in the trap! Got a divorce after that ......only joking! LOL x

I hear that rats are very intelligent, little creatures. I'm just not sure about their tails. How many rats make a wee pack? X
