Hope all goes well with the op, and it's the last you or she have to deal with this. I have some white, brushed cotton fabric I use over the fleece when I want to check on bleeding. Otherwise I just use fleece. You can put a layer of fiberglass window screen between the fleece and the sawdust, and the sawdust won't stick to the back of the fleece when you need to wash it.

set off this morning to get her to the vets it is not her normal vet, my vet recommended them as they have more specilist equipent for after care etc. it was quiet a distence away 60 mile round trip
anyway took everything with me, her cuddle den and her own towel as well as her own food and water bottle and some veggies for when she woke up (i was extremly stressed out last night and this morning)
anyway my vet had emailed all her records over to the vet we were attending today, he checked her over but said he was not happy to carry out the operation, for 2 reasons, the main one being that her thought the operation was going to be un-neccessary (the other being she probibly wouldnt make it through the op) i mean i probibly could have pused for him to carry it out, but he was highly qualified in exotics
he saw some of the dried discharge on her so he has given some stronger un licensed antibiotics for me to give her for the next 10 days, he said that they are strong enough to treat anything she has and are more sufficent for dealing with infections in the womb/vagina.
i am kind of relived even though i had prepaired for all her after op care, iv even took all next week off work so that i was home all the time to give her pain killers, recovery food and anti biotics and if there was any probs i could get them sorted stright away.
do either of you think this will be the end of it or has he just thrown me a blinder?? she is back in her cage now not looking any worse for ware after her car journey, i on the other hand am extremly drained by all this now.
thank you treebers and 3piggles, for all the advice and information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
coco and i really appreciate it XxXxXxXxXxXx

Teebers would know much better than I would. I have no idea what antibiotic he gave her, but all antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria. The digestive system needs good bacteria to digest the food, so you need to replace it with a probiotic.
For some pigs, grinding up vitapoos does the same thing as a probiotic, but if all the bacteria has been killed, I don't see how that would help in this case. I hope Teebers gets on here in case I'm wrong, but I would definitely get her a probiotic, and try to get that into her. Not sure how to do that if she doesn't eat, though.
What does unlicensed mean, unapproved?
The recovery diet is probably the best for her right now. I have added baby food and fruit juice to it in the past, just for variety. She will let you know if she's interested. If she continues to refuse to eat and starts losing weight, I would stop the antibiotic. Again, really hope Teebers sees this and comments before I recommend something terrible.
Good luck. Please keep us posted, and hugs!

my vet couldnt suggest anything else other than to maybe end her "misery" so to speak
3piggles is this probiotic like actimel or yakult?????????
i am also going to try come unsweetedned cranbury juice................. well im going to pretty much try anything at this point,
she is just lying down all the time, obviously i dont know whether she is moving when im out of the bedroom.
last night i put her not squeeking for her veggies down to abit of tiredness and stress from the vet trip, but today ii have offered her even more of the veggies even been and got some baby corn on the cob, as she liked that, only give it to her once in a blue moon, bacause its quiet fattening but she has still not eaten anything,
not even dried food
she is drinking, and i did gets some readi grass from the vets where she was ment to be having her op, i put some of that in her food bakll, and she has nibbled it but only afew strands
the antibiotics he gave her are called ENGEMYCIN, now these do not have any form of penicillin in i made teh nurse double check, anyone heard of them??
since i cant find that make on guinealynx medication page and my friend who has guinea pig has not heard of it and also the fact that the vets did say that sometimes they use unlicensed medication i presumed that this is one of them?

i have been searching, and came accross a thread in "THE GUINEA PIG FORUM" it said that engemycin is on the dangerous medication list for guinea pigs, i cant confirm this through guinealynx
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE CONFIRM THIS FOR ME AS A MATTER OF IMPORTANCE!

This is the GL section on probiotics. www.guinealynx.info/probiotics.htmlIt is oxtetracycline (sp) which is on the dangerous meds list on GL. I would stop it immediately, and go back to the other vet or even try another vet. Sorry, wish I'd had the name sooner. Not sure what the negative side effects are to guinea pigs, but if GL says it's bad, skip it!!! This dangerous meds section on GL has a link to a rabbit site that gives more info, if you want it. www.guinealynx.info/dangerous_medications.htmlI hope she will be okay!!!

Oxytetracyclines (engemycin) can be used in guinea pigs but they are definitely considered a 'use with caution' drug (according to the books by Richardson and Quesenberry referenced by GL which I happen to have here) - I certainly advise her to be on probiotics at the same time while she's on it. However, ultimately the risk of GIT stasis needs to be weighed up against the potential benefit in terms of fighting the infection. You're best to speak to the vet if you are concerned about this.
Considering the infection has not responded to baytril and surgery is not considered an option (was his opinion about her not making it thru the surgery based on her stability/ill health?), and the moderate risks involved in the use of oxytet, bacterial culture & sensitivity testing was another option that could have been looked at (however this usually takes 3-5 days...).
At this stage I wouldn't necessarily advise you to discontinue the antibiotics. It sounds like she's starting to really go downhill and the risk is probably worth it.

my vet has advised that i stop giving her the anti biotics and see how she went for a couople of days the last dose i gave her was on sunday, and although she did eat some dandilions leaves sunday night, and a small amount of parsley on monday morning, she has not eaten anthing during the night no dried food no cerlery, dandilion leaves, parsley, not drank much of her water either. i have been han d feeding her but i kknow im not getting anything near as much as she needs into her, i have weighed her and she does not seem to have lost any weight as yet but she is still puffed up, her eyes are watery and she is not making a single sound, no squeeking, nothing. im taking her back to my vet this afternoon, however i dont feel the outcome is going to be a happy one

I'm so sorry she's so poorly. There's nothing worse than trying to second guess a guinea pig illness. I totally hope the vet can find a better option for her. (((HUGS)))
