Tobymegan, I forgot to ask where in Kansas you live. I have a friend who lived in Emporia but moved to Ottawa last year. I don't really know Kansas except to look at places on the map, and from the photos my friend has posted. We had a couple of geese for a while, Tina and Charlie. Great for telling us when anyone entered the yard, and for keeping people from getting out of their vehicles!!! They did poop everywhere, though, and it got slippery in some places! Sorry, just saw this! Emporia is about an hour away! We just to shop there every couple of weeks at their Aldi's when I was a kid! Small world!

We have a new addition to our zoo, our Dexter cow Dax had a calf in late June! His name is Spot, he is completely white but she is completely black so when he stood against her he looked like a big spot!

Ooh, welcome to Wheekers, Spot, and I love the reason for the name I hope he has a grand life! My friend actually moved to Ottawa, KA after I posted that. I asked because she posts the weather map showing the tornado activity, and I wondered where you were on the map.

Oh how lovely to have Spot, you are so lucky. Strange how nature balances out one black and one white. Xx

Sorry for the slow response, been very busy lately. This is Spot, this picture was taken a week ago, he is getting pretty big now probably about 200lbs. He is a sweet boy, he was very shy and I couldn't get close to him so have been working with him on a daily basis and he is coming around! He loves his treats so he will now come up and see if I have anything for him, he is also now halter trained. He is going to be trained as "saddle cattle" so he has a lot of training left. "is that a treat?!"

It is not a new notion, actually many Native Americans rode cattle, but is coming back. Many people these days are training cattle to ride, they are easier to train/work with than horses, don't spook like horses, etc. Some ranchers have are even using them these days. My brother read about them in his Farm Show magazine and thought it would be fun to give it a try but he is so busy with work that he hasn't had any time so I've been working with Spot (and now I'm the only person he likes!) We really don't need another mouth to feed but didn't want to see him to go to the block (and we're a vegan family so he is safe here). Here is an example of a riding cow (this lady is in a group with me) That is great there is a new bread basketer in the group! My sister lives in OK with her hubby.

Excellent idea! I know some people would say that's cruel and abusive, but it gives cows a purpose other than producing milk and meat, and could save a lot of cow lives. If he can be trained to let children ride him, he might be able to do a little work for his keep We have several dairy farms around here, and they all host class tours from area schools. The kids would love a cow ride, and I'm sure it could be done safely.
