I was going to go and see Gravity yesterday but didn't make it - would definitely like to see it on the big screen so I hope I get my bum in gear!

Oh dear, I didn't manage to see it before it went off - my sister did and she didn't think too much of it though.
We saw the second Hunger Games film and that was really good, they've kept the films very true to the books. Looking forward to the final installment.

Bean I so want to see hunger games. I enjoyed the first one and did wonder if something like that could happen on earth in the future. My grand daughter, now 11 yrs liked it too ( which concerned me a bit!)......different world for the youths of today. I also want to see 12 years a slave bet it was a weepy Jo. See it won an golden globe award, best film this week. I watched 'foster' as in fostering a child, I would highly recommend it, suitable for Children too. Funny and weepy but just so very enjoyable xxx

I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave, but heard it warranted getting the award! I tend to avoid the weepy of poignant movies, as I have trouble dealing with them without getting depressed. Probably miss a lot, but stay happy!

I don't think I'd heard of it until Jo mentioned it, but saw it come up the news about the awards. Will definitely look out for it on DVD.
The Hunger Games is pretty bleak, agreed! I think kids can sort of skim over some horrible topics - they can enjoy books and films and follow the story without dwelling on just how ghastly things are. I think if they come back to them at a later stage in their life, they'll soak it all in and realise how much of the sinister stuff was lost on them!

A film we just watched 'The Hunt' has got a nomination for best foreign film in the Oscars. It's a Danish film about a male nursery worker who gets falsely accused of indecent behaviour with the kids. Whilst it was brilliantly done, it's understandably not a jolly film!
Did anyone watch Finding Mum and Dad - a program about the adoption parties they've started doing for some of the kids in care that are harder to place - like older kids, sibling groups or kids with long term illnesses.
Having potential adoptive parents meet these kids at a big organised 'fun day' is apparently much more effective in terms of adoption rates than simply presenting them on a piece of paper. It was a really moving program and so sad to think of so many lovely kids who aren't getting 'picked'. Even worse when someone had chosen to adopt a sibling of the kid, but not taken him/her too. I know the focus is supposed to be on the fact that one kid has a chance with a forever family, but to have had to be taken into care and then have your sibling taken away from you while you still remain in care must be so damaging for the little ones. I don't think I'd have the heart to split up siblings if we were adopting, but they said people often want one girl and one boy? Like you can do that sort of shopping when you have kids!
What also really came across was the amazing work foster parents do in turning kids' lives around and getting them ready for the next phase of their lives. When our two are older, and if we have a bigger house at that point, it's definitely something we'd consider doing. Looks harrowing at times though!

I know exactly what you mean 3piggles love, I avoid sad films too and if it is an animal film I just won't watch it. I cannot even hear the theme tune to Bright Eyes, let alone watch the film. I haven't seen War Horse for the same reason.

Okay, now to show what a film hack I am. Just watched A Great Day To Die Hard with Bruce Willis. Loved every minute of it I will probably see Jack Ryan when it comes on TV, too. I love actions flicks!

The Die Hard films are great fun!
We saw American Hustle. It was good, the plot was fun and the acting was certainly fantastic. But I wasn't as blown away by it as I'd expected to be by hearing about all the awards it's won; there were a few points where my mind wandered a bit. But glad we saw it - it's worth a watch.

That's one of my main problems. I get bored and start finding fault with everything. Stops being fun to watch. I wish directors would keep the plot moving, and not let it stall in places.

Glad you enjoyed die hard Piggles, I laugh at die hard films. How can any human endure all these experiences and come out dirty and a wee scratch, great to watch though. Going to read your post again Bean as I do fancy watching the finding mum and dad, it can be uplifting knowing other, like 'some' foster parents can make changes in a child's life. Xx

I talk to the actors through the whole film. I can't believe how many action films have the good guy shoot one of many bad guys, then go off and leave the bad guys weapon behind. Then good guy runs out of ammo, Duh! Hubby gets such a hoot out of listening to me yelling at them

Yes. I loved that movie. It was sad in a good way, because they survived. I just wished they'd never been put in that position in the first place. Definitely a family movie!

We watched the original Stargate movie last night, with Kurt Russell and James Spader. Still far more of a Stargate fan than I ever was a Star Wars fan. Do miss the series, and Richard Dean Anderson's character of Col. O'Neil.
