Thought I'd introduce you to our new boys: Cadbury and Josh. Here they are aged 5 weeks at the rescue, the marvellous Camp Nibble where they were born (their mum was taken in there while she was pregnant). They were called Angus and Josh at this point, but whereas my son decided to keep the name Josh (and take in Angus as one of his middle names), my daughter renamed the lovely chocolatey-looking Angus Cadbury. He mostly gets called Cadders though! Here they are not long after they came home with us. They were so skittish at first but have mellowed out loads now. I think Cadders, although much smaller and a bit shyer with people, will be the boss (which I predicted from the look in his eye in the first photo, before we'd got them and fella said I was making unfair judgements...). Josh is much bigger (see the next photos), bolder and a bit of a goofball. Will carry on on another post as have a couple more pictures and I've reached the limit...

Here they are earlier today enjoying some time on the lawn. We had a real turning point recently as although they've been out a few times, they seemingly didn't realise that the floor was covered in grass and dandelions and waited for me to pass them to them! Now they're straight down to munching business! Can't believe how much bigger they are in just a few weeks! We're hoping to make them a new cage - something that incorporates a small storage area underneath and possibly a covered loft area. I'd also potentially like to have a door to open the main cage area down to the floor (via a ramp) so they can free range when they're a little bit older and wiser! I have a load of shelving, some cubes, some lino, and can of course get other things I need - just working out the best way to do it. I like the look of wood but am wondering how best to seal it so it doesn't get smelly. Also Josh is a real chewer so whatever I do will have to protect him from himself! I was also wondering if I should be cautious and have a plan which can be built on in the unlikely event they ever fall out and need to be separated. Or if I should be more optimistic?! So many things to think about!

Gosh josh does Look like a cheeky little terror! I have a single bed frame from Ikea as my cage with coroplast lining... The boys can't get to the wood, we just popped another bed on top to make it a high rise! It's brilliant! After so many types of cages, I wouldn't have anything else! And it was only $35 too! Bargain!

It's very hard to get it all in one photo... But this is two bed frames stacked to make two cages... It makes a cage just under 1x2metres... Or you could divide it to make two...

Oh that's fantastic! Not sure we quite have room for that set up in our living room - what a shame! Good to get these ideas though. Love the decorations on the correx too, hadn't thought of doing that but it looks great.
Margaret, it sounds like hubby thinks he has good cause to be suspicious when he catches you looking at pigs on the computer!

Well... It would be easy enough to make a frame to your own dimensions... I've just gone a wee bit overboard... They're my substitute for lack of furless kids! The stickers are just wall decals! Cheap as chips in dollar stores and removable too! Not sure if I've told the story... I got a sea themes sheet, and put some fish inside the walls, to brighten up the boys bedroom area... Well... Ulysses took one look at them and hightailed it to the other end of the cage! He refused to go back until I removed the offending google eye fish! Hehehe he was horrified by them... Not sure if it was because they were scary, or he just though I was being naff...

Thanks Jo - you do know your favourite photo is the only picture I didn't take myself, but don't worry, I won't take it personally haha!
Oh poor Ulysses! That did make me laugh though! I wonder why it freaked him out so much - probably thought some big predator was lying in wait for him... Or maybe you're right, maybe he just thought you were getting way too cheesy and he wanted to draw the line!
Thought we were going to get a new run for the boys yesterday - someone was giving one away on the fantastic freecycle (where people give things away they no longer want). It would have been great as it was nice and big and had a little nesting box accessed via a ramp - somewhere for them to hide, rest or shelter. But it didn't fit in the car by a few inches, and because of the way it was built and the fact it was a bit dilapidated, it wouldn't really have worked to take it to bits either. Hey ho, I've told fella he can build me one after he's built the pigs a new cage - and put all that shelving up... (These are probably things I could do myself, but he gets out of doing so much around the house that I feel it's only fair to award him at least one domain that I don't step in to!)

Here here! I agree! My hubs gets out of all things domestic so I allow him to own the dishes... I don't want to intrude on his own thing... So I always leave them for him!!!!

Hey Monkey that's a great set up with the bed frame, ideal if you have a spare room. Do you have wood and waterproof cover on the bottom. That's a pity about the run Bean. I got an old run from someone but it turned out to need so much cleaning and tons of nails that and we ended up taking to the skip. I never get good second hand stuff, I always think , 'hey that's a bargain' pay my money and then when I get home and look properly, it's normally junk. Your piggies are lovely, look at their wee mouths ..........so cute. Xx

If you had enough doubts to not get it, it's probably just as well. We got a used above ground swimming pool from some coworker of hubby's, once. By the time we figured the cost of all the broken parts we needed to replace, we could have bought a new one. Just not worth it sometimes.

I happened to be at the builders' merchants yesterday and took a few moments to eye up what supplies I'll need to build a run - will plan it out properly and go back. And stuff for the cage of course. I was thinking of this cage that Anna's hubby made for her pigs (scroll to the bottom for the nearly done pics) and am thinking of a budget/ less fancy version of it with a bit of storage underneath would work well. I need to draw a plan up and then I'll post it up here for suggestions! Sorry that run you got from someone was rubbish, Margaret - I'll think that this one would have been the same and I've saved myself some hassle and disappointment not bringing it back! The roof had already been repaired with a tarp over the felt, so along with a few rotten bits (especially around the nesting area), it probably would have taken a fair bit of fixing up.

Wow, I knew Andy had some carpentry talent, but that is great! The Butler princesses were lucky to have that cage! Don't know if Fella can do joinery like that. Hubby says it takes tools he doesn't have. Never know if that's true, or he just doesn't want to do it!
Wax is another way of preserving the wood, as I think some are vegetable based.

Margaret, I figure if you can create more than one area of different things to do, so they have to get exercise playing in each area and moving between areas, it's a good space. The options are so varied, that pretty much any option that includes those aspects works great.
I think that cage for the Butler princesses is still in use!
