New here, first post.
I have been keeping piggys since December 2013, so not too long. I have 2 boys, Charlie and Henry.
I'm a mother to 2 kids ages 16 and 12. My husband is a US Marine. I work as a Lead Infant Caregiver in a local daycare. I also have 2 dogs.
We are moving from FL to CA in 69 days!

A very warm welcome to our happy family love, this is a great place to be. Good luck with the move; that is quite a distance isn't it?

It is, yes. However with my husband being a Marine it's not uncommon for us to move. Thanks for the warm welcome. I look forward to learning my way around here.

Hello and another warm welcome to Wheekers! I imagine the pigs, the dogs and your kids keep you nice and busy there!
Hope you are more organised than me when it comes to moving. Or if you move every now and then, do you tend to keep a lid on how much stuff you accumulate?!

Yes Bean I do stay awfully dang busy! I like it that way though.
We are pretty organized, moving every 4ish years will do that to you!

Yes, if I'd thought I was moving in a year or two, I probably wouldn't have filled our enormous shed with so much junk that I probably should have just passed on or throw out over the last couple of years!
Just being nosy - how will your family and your pets/ possessions get from A to B when you move? Being in the UK, it's hard to move to anywhere you can't get to within a day or so in a big van, so I'm just pondering the logistics!

You're not being nosy! I'm a pretty open person. The military will pay to have a company come in and pack all of our household goods (minus things like food, liquids) and put them into an 18 wheeler to take the stuff to our destination. We will tow our car behind our truck and pack up us and the zoo and drive 4 days to CA. We will have to make planned stops at pet friendly hotels every night. Once we get out there and find a house the moving company will bring our belongs to us. We could be without our belongs for up to a month though. I get an eye twitch just thinking about it!

Hello and welcome Wow, that's quite an undertaking. Is this a Pensacola to San Diego move? Only asking because I have friends in San Diego, and it seems to be a friendly place. Also has a great exotics vet for your boys in San Diego I hope the move goes flawlessly!

That's great you get help packing everything up - hope it doesn't take you too long to find a place you like once you arrive, so that the living out of a suitcase period doesn't try your patience! If you wanted them to, would the military organise somewhere permanent for you to live in advance, or is it usually left to people to decide for themselves once they reach the area?
Four days driving - is everyone pretty laid back about that sort of trip or do you have to plan stuff to keep the kids occupied? To be honest, it's me who's the problem on car journeys, not the kids (who are much younger than yours) - I get restless after about 3 hours! I like staying in hotels though, so I could do your trip over a month and have a pretty nice time!

It is a Pensacola to San Diego move! It's a bit of a homecoming for us. We spent 9 years out there at the beginning of my hubbys career.
There is a list for base housing, but we can't get on that list until we get there. The schools that the base feeds into are pretty terrible out there so it's not an option for us.
Everyone is pretty laid back for the journeys we take. The dogs are worse than the kids! I do feel bad though, since we are towing my car the poor hubby will do ALL the driving. :-(

Oooh must be nice to go back to where you started out! Have you still got some friends back there that you're looking forward to seeing a lot of again, or have most people moved on?
Do your kids cope well with moving area and school fairly regularly or do you get complaints about leaving friends etc? (I warned you I was over-curious didn't I?!) I was just talking with a friend who's moved around a bit and her daughter (she's only 7) is funny as everywhere they go she says it's not as good as the last place they lived, and how great the other place was. She does it every time, but will never admit she likes somewhere while she's actually there! She's so confident and relaxed - she makes friends easily and doesn't seem at all put out by it. It's just her thing, at least for the moment!

It will be nice to go back to CA for a bit. It's not home though, home is Pennsylvania. What's neat about going back to CA is that it is where my journey as a Marine Corps Wife began. My hubby will be retiring while we are there, so my journey will also come to an end there. Most people that we were friends with back then have moved on, but I am sure with us being there for 3 years we will run into someone eventually.
My kids HATE leaving their friends, but LOVE making new ones. With todays technology they are able to stay in touch with them at least. I think all the moving has mad my kids very easy going. They have no problem going into a new situation or anew group of people. I feel that the have learned valuable life skills that they may not have gotten otherwise. They have met people from all over the country with different ethnic and economic backgrounds. Which is also a blessing in my eyes!
We aren't actually going to San Diego. There is a base in SD, but we will be going to Camp Pendleton in Oeanside, CA. Oceanside is practically right in between San Diego and Los Angeles. It would be wonderful to find some fellow piggy lovers once I get out there.

David lives in the high desert aboce Los Angeles. I don't think that's close to San Diego, but I'm not sure. Val Amerault Vale, Janet Hughes and Annalee Aelo Sellinger are all in San Diego. Annalee's hubby is based there, and Val's son still has base connections.

Oooh coming full circle in California - that's a nice touch. Is Pennsylvania where you/ you're both from originally? I lived in the same city until I was 18 (and moved back there 10 years later!) so it's interesting to know where people think of as home if they're travelled around a lot. My mum's dad was in the RAF and moved around frequently, so she doesn't have an emotional pull towards one particular place from her years growing up. Your kids sound great and I'm sure good times lie ahead for them after your move.

Yes, Scott(my hubby)and I are both from the same small town in PA. We have been best friends since we were 12. We just didn't realize we were going to get married! And now we have been married almost 17 years and have known each other for what seems like forever! We still consider PA home, and the kids do as well, but I'm nit sure why.

That's where both of you spent a long block of time, before you started moving around, and it's where your families live. I've moved so many times, I just say I'm from Massachusetts Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk

Aww that's so sweet you've been best friends for so long, and that your families are from the same place too. Would you like to move back there someday or is it too small a place - or perhaps there are too many other places you want to go?!
3piggles, I have the Bee Gees song going round in my head now - don't think I'll get that out before I go to bed!
