Hi everyone! Hope you're all well.
Just a quick one, is it true that teeth chattering is a sign of aggression? I had Henry out earlier and he was sat on my bed. I was next to him but not close enough to be touching him and he was fine for a while but then he started with the teeth chattering. He does it quite often when I'm by his cage but he's never done it whilst he's been out before. Was he warning me off? (He's never been the friendliest guinea pig!)
Thanks

Not necessarily. Teeth chattering is a sound of frustration or upset, which could mean you're taking way too long getting him a treat, he wasn't in a mood to be picked up, he doesn't like some sound or smell that came with you, or a host of other things. My Zippy used to have whole conversations, running a whole variety of sounds and body movements together. Morty doesn't use the body movements, but has long stories to tell anyone who will listen. Pigs also bully, so if he's the type to set you up to placate him with a snack, he'll try it

Since my one guinea pig passed away recently, I've been worried that Melvin would be lonely. I give him lots of attention. He comes out on the couch with me in the morning for my breakfast and in the evening when I watch tv. He will sit on the couch for a while and then he comes over and runs up to sit on my chest. It's very cute. When he sits there, he starts the teeth chattering and I don't understand why. I read that it's a sign of aggression or impatience maybe, but he runs up there himself, so why is he being annoyed? Can it mean anything else?

I would say frustration at not having another piggy friend to talk to. He may have communicated something to you, that you missed completely, and he's showing his frustration. Teeth chattering between pigs is a sign of aggression or annoyance, but pig to person isn't as simple. That is sweet of him, and he wants to be with you, but it may also mean he's very lonely, and just angry and frustrated with his situation. I doubt it's not upset with you, specifically.

We have Merlin in a separate run at the moment because we have to have him neutered and he is constantly nosing my other guinea pigs. Luckily I have heard no chattering so far so he is neither cross or distressed. It could mean anything hun.
