So the foster pig Murphy is coming to stay with us for a bit. Who can tell me what to expect with hair care?

Texels are the ones with long, curly hair, right? If so, I remember a member learning the hard way not to brush them. I'm trying to remember, but something aboutcit straightening the curl. Not sure, sorry. I do know all long haired pigs need a trim periodically, usually so they are cooler in the summer. Otherwise just clip out any mats instead of brushing (I really hope I have that right)!

Yes, they have long curly hair. I'm not sure about Murphy though now that he is here. Maybe the curls have been brushed out I don't know. His hair is wavy in spots and curly in others. Maybe he's a mix?

I've only ever had short haireds. I had a friend who had lots of long haireds and she definitely favoured a shorter cut over trying to brush - on the grounds that whilst they would tolerate it, they really didn't like having their hair brushed for as long as was necessary to keep it in good condition and avoid troublesome knots.

Well we shaved his belly and boy bits down a little last night. He didn't protest too much, but it did take 2 people. I think that if I can keep all the hair that might get peed on off the ground we should be OK. He is in need of a bath though. Do I need to use a conditioner on him? Maybe a little dab of coconut oil to run thru his hair? (Humans do it) Is he going to need a bath or maybe just a bum rinse more than the others? What is so nice about fostering him is that I can see all aspects of having a long haired pig BEFORE committing to it!

I think keeping the hair out of the urine is the most important step. He shouldn't need extra butt dunks, as that's more about his digestive system. Keep those poos solid! As for bathing, it removes the natural oils that keep our skin and hair hydrated and protected. Only bath him if he really smells or gets a lot of junk stuck on his hair. I remember that member saying something about sort of fluffing their hair instead of petting them.

I found this interesting article about texel piggies in general along with advice on grooming. Hope it helps.

Good info, and probably worth checking with Gorgeous Guineas and Organix South for a skin product. I recommend GG, because Chrissie answers your questions herself and makes the products, so she can tell you exactly what you need. She won't try to sell you what you don't need, and will pass on any personal experience she has. OS just processes your ordercabd ships.
