As with cats, guinea pigs groom themselves. They really shouldn't be washed very often, and only when they get into something, like the butt dunks you've been doing. They distribute the natural oils through their grooming, but washing removes the natural oils and can cause dry skin. Any area with humidity much below 30%, it's advisable to use a humidifier near the cage, to add moisture to the air.

I generally bathe them as needed.. Jane actually likes the water and willingly splashes around. I always keep the water very low, so there's no danger of their feeling their head will go under water, etc. But, they have not had to have baths in quite some time, everyone has stayed tidy

I have never had to bath the two I have now, they keep themselves very nice, it is a pity they make such a mess of their home and do not believe in doing any housework LOL!!
Hugs JO xx

My Momma pig loved to swim. I would put water in the bathtub, and she would swim circles around the perimeter. She even swam under the flow from the faucet. The others thought she was nuts, but huddled miserably on the island in the middle. Swimming in water is not the same as having chemical products used on their hair and skin. They can swim as much as they want. It's great exercise, especially if an older pig gets arthritis
