This afternoon, one of my piggies (either George or Arthur; I wasn't in the room at the time) did something I've never heard before. I have seen "singing" mentioned occasionally here on the forum, and that's what it sounded like. It wasn't their usual FEED ME wheek, not purring or other of their common vocalizations. I can only describe it as singing: not loud, with changes in pitch. Have any of you experienced this? Is there any significance to it? Are they particularly happy when they do it, or can anyone really say what it means? I must say that it was quite enjoyable!

Chirping?
There's no consensus on what it actually means, but the pigs I've had do it have certainly not looked in any kind of distress so I don't think it's an unhappy sound. It's certainly intriguing to experience!
The first time I heard it was about 3am in the morning and I'd got up to find out why there was a car alarm going off in my living room!

The sound I heard wasn't like that, Bean. It was at a moderate volume and comprised several different pitches. It was, in a way, very melodic. Whichever it was, he "sang" two more times last night before lights out.

I heard LG do that, but what I call singing is a haunting, melodic sound. LG did that, too, but one of my current pigs also does it. I've never found a recording of the song, and when we tried to record it, wr interrupted her, and she stopped. She always did it at night, once we were in bed.

Haunting and melodic ... that sounds exactly what George (or Arthur) does. George is the likely suspect, as he's always been more vocal than Arthur. On the other hand, perhaps Arthur has finally found the means to express himself. I'm hoping that whichever piggie it is, he'll do it while I'm in the office with them.

After we heard it the first time, I hung fairy lights around the cage so we could peek in without them knowing. That's how we knew it was LG. Been using fairy lights to watch them ever since

One of my piggies used to make an unusual singing/chirping sound, once in a while. It didn't sound exactly like the video above, but similar. I remember thinking it sounded kind of bird-like, but with different pitches. I think it was Potroast, but I'm not sure because I'd be in a different room when I heard it, and then try to quietly sneak up on them and by the time I got close, whoever it was had stopped. It was really interesting and fun to hear it on the rare occasions it happened!

The American Cardinal, that gorgeous bright red bird, sings at the same pitch as guinea pig chirping. When I have the piggy room windows open, the pigs have always stopped to listen, when a Cardinal chirped.

That is lovely 3piggles, I would love to hear him. We don't have brightly coloured birds in the UK as a rule.

We have Cardinals and the occasional Baltimore Oriole, and in winter we get Grossbeaks and Goldfinches, which are a pretty yellow. Otherwise, the brightly colored birds live well south of us.
