What do you guys recommend for pellets for your piggies? I also use whatever brand is at Walmart but I switched to more expensive food from petco that is colorful and has fruits and veggies dehydrated in them but I heard that that's not necessarily healthy for them either so I guess I'm not sure what to get. Thanks in advance!

None of the mixes are very healthy - they tend to have all sorts of things that guinea pigs don't need in terms of added sugars, artifical colourings, nuts or fruits. They can encourage selective feeding too. A plain pellet is best - for pigs up to a year old an alfalfa pellet is ideal as alfalfa is a high energy grain and has plenty of calcium for growing bones. Over here Burgess Guinea Excel is a popular pellet - I used it with my boys until a few months ago when they reached 1 year. For adult pigs whose energy requirements are lower, many people prefer to feed a timothy-based pellet such as Cavy Cuisine. There are some health problems associated with high calcium in an adult pig's diet, such as bladder stones, so many people prefer timothy-based pellets for this reason too. I use Cavy Cuisine now - it isn't cheap over here but I don't feed many pellets really, so a bag does last a long time. It may be more information that you want, but Guinea Lynx has some comprehensive info on different pellet brands.

Oxbow Cavy Cuisine is the one most recommended by vets. Burgess Excel is also very good. Stay way from Kaytee and L&M. I did a comparison of all the readily available brands, several years ago. It's probably in my thread in Meet the Pigs, way back. KMS Hayloft and Small Pet Select, were also very good. Both are mail order only. I stopped with KM, when the shipping costs reached extremes this past year. The cost of shipping varies by location, so if you are not in one of the super expensive locations, you will probably do better. I found shipping was a lot less with Small Pet Select.

Second on the Oxbow. Booty loves it as well as my degus get it mixed with their degu pellet and they always eat the Oxbow first. Thinking I'm not wasting money on the degu food when they can eat the GP food anyway and prefer it.
