It's been a couple of days since I picked up Mia and petted her, so I was surprised to see her left eye had totally clouded over since then. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, and is getting around fine, but I will call the vet Monday, and make an appointment to take her in for an exam. It could be a hay poke or cataracts, but if it can be treated, I want to get that started ASAP. Vets aren't open on the weekends, here, or I'd take her in sooner. So my little girl got lots of snuggles while I checked out her eye.
One of the problems with getting pigs from rescues is that there's no way of telling how old they are, unless they were born at the rescue or rescued as newborns. So I have no idea how old any of my pigs are, but figure they have to be at least 5 by now. Momo seems younger than Mia. They were rescued from the same hoarder, but could be of radically different ages.
I've also noticed that Morty is starting to have a messy bum all the time. He's not always wet, but has been. That's also usually a sign of age, which I don't like seeing. If it warms up at all, I may give Morty a butt dunk, just to see how quickly he gets dirty.

Oh dear, I hope it's just a piece of hay. We've had a few cloudy eyes from hay, that have cleared up within a couple of days.

She's acting a little more lively, today. She had been sleeping in the most remote part of the cage. Not sure if she was cold, or just liked being out of Mortys bumbling way. I rearrange their condo, and put in a couple of pigloos. That seems to have brought her out. I am keeping a close eye on her.
I've noticed that she's showing signs of age. Her hair is kind of rough, and she's not moving as quickly as she used to. She's still very into getting her veggies and hay,but now I find her sleeping in the hay more than eating it. I will take Morty with her to the vet, so she has company. I don't want her stressed any more than necessary.

Always dispiriting to see signs of age, but hopefully they have many happy and healthy times ahead of them.
How's Mia's eye? I've had that a couple of times. In one pig there was a hay seed wedged in their eye and once that was out, it healed beautifully. Another was just poke and healed up nicely. I've heard of people needing antibiotics and stuff for similar injuries though. The way the eye clouds to protect itself is so dramatic.
Good luck at the vets, hope it's a reassuring visit. Please let us know how you get on - I'll keep my fingers crossed. x

Our Lacy Jane has started showing signs of age and it is not a happy thought. they are both eating well though and behaving normally so I hope I will have her for a lot longer yet.

About 6 inches of snow so far, and everything is closed, so I will call the vet tomorrow, and get Mia an appointment. I will definitely keep you all informed. It is sad to see them showing the signs of age. We were talking about not knowing how old any of them are, so just hoping to have them for a lot longer. They are sleeping today, as I have the fleece covering their condos, to keep out the draft from the open door. They are all snuggled in, unless I make potential treat noises, then it's total chaos

Does Mia's eye look like it's getting better? Cataracts don't usually com on quite as quickly but if it was an injury, you'd be hoping it'd be healing over by now - unless there was something still stuck in it. Fingers staying crossed.

It's weird, Jo. I pick them up or at least get up close to them every day, and I didn't notice the problem. Then I did, and it was there for a while. Now I don't see it anymore??? I did find a skin tag on Mortys elbow. I don't think it's anything but a skin tag, but it's one more old age sign. Momo seems so much younger than Morty and Mia do, and she's also a featherweight. I think Morty weighs at least 3 times as much as Momo. So I'm keeping a close eye on them. It has either snowed or been bitterly cold and windy, all week, so not a good week to take them to the vet. I haven't been feeling up to it, anyway, so just as well. So as of now, her eye seems to be clear, again.

That's great her eye has cleared up. Probably just got a bit of hay poked in it or something. I remember it can clear up almost as quickly as it appears.

So now that I feel well enough to take the pigs to the vet, we have another snow storm coming in. I do love snow, but it seems a bit endless right now. I'm glad none of them desperately needs a vet. I do think it must have been a hay poke, and she flushed it. Whew!

Tell me about it. When we moved here, we both had 4 wheel drive vehicles. Now neither of us does. It's okay, as I don't have to go out, and hubby can work from home, but in an emergency, it's not good.

I grew up in snow country, so I've always been in it, and got kind of used to that sliding. I hydroplaned a couple of times, and that is a totally different, and totally freaky feeling. The tires ride on top of the water on the road, and there's no traction at all. We're trained to steer out of snow/ice skids, but nothing works for hydroplaning. Our state has had 13 state police cruisers hit by motorists going too fast for the road conditions, and unable to stop when they see the cruiser. You'd think, considering we only have a snowless/iceless winter about once ever century, that the idiots would learn. They never do. We were coming back from getting our taxes done, in a snow storm. We had 4 wheel drive. All of us with 4 wheel drive were in the slow lane on the highway, doing about 35 mph. An idiot in a Ford Mustang flew by us all, in the fast lane. Yep, he was off the road and in the median strip about a mile later. Never fails, and they never learn. The other maniacs are the ones who think, because they have 4 wheel drive, they can go as fast and make as sharp turns as they want. Nope! They're usually flipped over at the off ramps, and they still never learn. Kind of wonder if it's the same people doing it every year I'm going to have hubby help me set up a run for the pigs, on the rug. I have a great shower curtain that will protect the carpet, and I can build a double run, so they can all be out at the same time. That way Mia gets to see and interact with the other pigs. They are all slowing down because of the constant storms. Instead of a week of sunlight, we might get a day a week of sunlight, and it's not very uplifting. I think a change of scenery will do them well.
