Lol, Bean! Your story about the fox/box reminded me of one hubby and I had at the last house. I went to the front door/storm door closed, inside door open, and a huge bobcat was standing at the foot of the stairs. I was so flustered, all I could think to call up to hubby was "cat, big cat!" Hubby was asking all these questions, and just kept repeating it. Finally it moved on toward the woods, and hubby came downstairs. We went outside, and it was just into the woods, so hubby got to see it. Much bigger than any bobcat I'd seen before, but because it has the stubby tail, we knew it wasn't a mountain lion. My eloquence tends to abandon me when it's needed the most We also had the deer come through into the back yard, see our poor old cat lying in a sun spot, and decided to bully the poor cat. That deer stomped and snorted, but the cat didn't move. We were about to intervene, when the deer went on its way. We had a window open, so would have started yelling and making noise to scare it away. I had a long conversation with a little squirrel buddy in the big bush where we have all the thermometers hanging for the indoor/outdoor thermometers. I couldn't even find the thermometers, so I was looking at the bush from all directions, from the bit of thawed lawn area. I think the squirrel thought I was stalking him I expected to get chattered at, but no

It sounds divine where you are Piggles love, a bob cat in your house. The trouble with me I have to remind myself that not everything wants to be petted LOL!! I am glad your kitty stood his ground, naughty deer and I can imagine you having a chat to the little squirrel. I always talk to animals no matter where I am.

I figure the neighbors think I'm a bit strange for talking to the birds and squirrels, but the birds and squirrels don't seem to mind

I've quite often been nattering away to the rabbits for ages, then realise my neighbour has been gardening at the other side of the fence the entire time! He's hard of hearing so maybe he hasn't noticed there isn't someone answering me?!

I was nattering away to a family of grasshoppers once, they were lovely. I don't care what people think either love, I will always talk to animals.

I don't think they understand me word for word, but I know they know I'm communicating with them, and my tone of voice tells them if it's good or bad communication. I figure anyone who thinks it's strange to talk to animals thinks animals are too stupid to get much from the conversation. That's sad. Last night I was in the family room finishing cleaning Pigloo City, when hubby came home and called out a hello from upstairs. I called a hello back to him just as a squirrel was passing outside the door. He stopped and chattered back at me, so thinking I was talking to him, hubby came downstairs to find me in a conversation with a squirrel, lol

That is adorable hun and I agree, they do understand communication I wonder if you will ever be able to stroke Mr or Mrs Squirrel LOL!! If people think we are silly talking to animals, just let them get on with it, as you say hun, they are the loosers.

I don't really want to pet them, Jo. I love watching animals be the animals they are, and helping when I can. I really don't want to tame them, for fear they will trust the wrong people, and get hurt. I'll keep talking to them, as I know they know my voice. During the winter, I'd open the door and some would start to run away. As soon as I said good morning, they'd stop and come back. I can't wait for my little chipmunk buddy to return. I've seen one across the lawn, but I think as long as the squirrels are here, he'll stay away. I can get in and out of the nest under the front step, though, so I should see them, soon I haven't been able to feed the squirrels for the past two days, due to my back issues. Hubby said there is so much food coming out of the thawing snow, it's time to stop feeding them, anyway. I think he's right, and though we're getting snow today, it will all melt tomorrow, and all the open grass areas will be back.

You are absolutely right hun. As a child I used to wish the little birds would come up to me for a fuss but as I got older and on reflection, I am glad they didn't. I just love the thought of fussing any animal.

I find it very therapeutic talking to animals because I think they answer in their own way.

I think they do, too. Since I stopped putting out peanuts, the squirrels have been really going through all the stuff on the ground, and there is quite a lot. There are some that constantly try to get seed from the bird feeders, and they are being a really pain in the butt. I don't yell at them or bang on the house the way hubby does, but they can't get the seed, so it just keeps the birds from getting any. If they let the birds feed, enough seed drops under the feeders, for the squirrels to get some. When I open the door to shew away the squirrels on the feeders, the rest of them look up, see that it's me, and go back to foraging. That's nice that they aren't scared enough to run off each time.

The ones using the rhododendron to get to the bird feeders have stopped running away when I open the door, and now I have to step outside to convince them I'm serious Cheeky!

Yesterday was the first really warm day (78F) that we've had this spring, so I sat out on the front patio in the sun. Larry came by and took a peanut from my hand, so he seems to remember me. Or the peanuts ...

I think animals know, understand and remember a lot more than we give them credit for. I don't have one special squirrel, but since the squirrels don't run away when I open the door, they know who I am, and that I'm the one who fed them and didn't hurt them. I don't want them bothering my feeders, but they have to eat, too. I think Larry will not only remember you, but your location. Glad he stopped by to visit you

I am so glad Larry remembered you love, how wonderful to have your own little a squirrel friend. We have a seagull who returns every year, he has just come back. He has certainly remembered us and the little treats he gets.
