I know I read this is not a health forum ..but I just got a new baby pig and he has had some hair loss and some red skin with a few scabby areas around his gave nose area. The store where I got him from said it was getting better...I hope this is not mites. I am relativey a new piggy mom. I have him quatented away from my other pigs. I put some organic coconut oil on the area. Wish I knew how to post a pic.

I'm sorry your little chap has a poorly nose - sounds sore. It saddens me that a pet shop is releasing animals they know not to be in full health, especially without having investigated what it is and made sure he got proper treatment. I think he definitely needs to see a vet - it could be a bacterial or fungal infection which needs treatment. Cheilitis springs to mind and fungal problems can pop up around the nose too. Fingers crossed you can find out what it is and get to the bottom of it and make sure it doesn't spread - fungal infections can pass from pet to person as well as other pigs, so good job keeping him separate until you find out what it is, and be careful about protecting your hands too. Good luck.

I would take him to a vet who is knowledgeable about guinea pigs. If it's mites, just have the vet treat it, and skip the skin scraping. Skin scrapings don't tell much that a close exam of the pig doesn't tell, and it really hurts the pig. Good luck!
