I had to have my African Pygmy Hedgehog PTS today. he hadn't eaten for a couple of days and didn't move. I know he is 4 and that is the age they live to, but I am still very very upset.

I am so sorry, Jo It doesn't matter how long they're supposed to live, they are our babies, and it hurts something awful to lose them. Lots and lots of hugs

If I've learned anything, it's that no matter how hard it is on us, it's harder on them continuing to fight. I feel worse about the times I know I put it off too long, because I couldn't say good bye. They deserved better. I just wish humans got the same consideration. There have to be ways to keep greedy relatives from bumping off their wealthy elders, and still let people choose when to end their own pain and suffering.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I agree with 3piggles too. The decision to have an animal put to sleep is the hardest. You really have to put yourself aside and not think of how sad it is for you, but what's best for the animal. I have had to do it a few times and I also wonder if I put it off longer than I should have. It's such a horrible decision. My last cat that passed away and my one guinea pig, died at home naturally. It was very hard to see, but I'm happy it happened that way (for selfish reasons maybe?). Anyway, I really feel for you Jo. It's devastating to lose a pet.

Thank you my darlings for two wonderful messages. I agree with everything you both say. Now if I know an animal is suffering I want to end it as soon as possible. This is partly for selfish reasons too, not only do I not want to prolong the suffering, but if I know it is inevitable I want to say goodbye as soon as possible because it is so hard.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this, Jo. I know how much you loved him and well done for putting his needs first, even when it was such a hard thing for you to do. Sounds like he had a great and long life with you, you should feel proud. xx

Aww that must have been so upsetting, Jo. It's a tough thing to have to do, but we know when they've had enough and it's a kindness to stop them having to endure anything else. I hope you are feeling okay xx
