My staple hay is meadow hay from a local farm - lovely and fresh and only £4 for a large bale which lasts ages.
I'm sure your local farmer's hay will be fine - is there any particular reason you think it might not be?

I don't see why it wouldn't be, unless you know his field gets sprayed with pesticides or something. The main difference between local timothy and store bought is that the store bought has been sorted for any living or dead animals, weeds and anything that might not be good. The local hay costs less, because you get a bale, and do all that yourself. I used to get field hay, as no one in our area grew Timothy. 15 years ago, it was $7/bale, so a fabulous buy! I just don't have space for a bale in the condo, or I would still buy it by the bale.

Thank you! I thought I'd keep the hay in a clean garbage container to keep outice etc

Sounds good. Any airtight container will keep it fresh, but make sure it has internal room for air circulation. Even just putting something to keep it off the bottom of the trash container helps let air circulate inside the container.
