Tonight was a little different! When I went in to feed them their last meal for the night, Oscar was resting in his pigloo (both piggies had been out for exercise a little while ago) while Deo was outside his pigloo just looking at me expectantly. I just went and got Deo his food first, and no chattering occurred. Oscar did not seem to mind, either. I figure, first come, first served!

All of ours climb the pen when I am coming around with their cucumber and I try to give Darcy his first so that he stands a chance of getting some. Fortunately though, I have noticed that he has stated standing up for himself and getting his fair share, about time LOL!!

That's excellent, Jo Their hierarchies depend on them establishing a place in it, or being at the very bottom. Not a good place to be. It's great to see Oodles using her voice to establish her place, and for Darcy to be pushing for his place

I was really pleased Piggles love, she still nags him a bit sometimes but if she goes too far he will put her in her place.

Deo has a cold; his energy levels have dropped and he's not eating his hay. I took him to a vet and he prescribed some medicine, so I've been giving him what he needs twice a day. He just sleeps a lot lately, but the vet said the medicine should be administered for 10 days, so we'll see what happens. On a side note, the vet recommended giving Oscar some antibiotics because he's been sneezing a lot lately. Let me tell you, both of them aren't thrilled with having a plastic tube of yucky medicine slipped into their mouths. Their reaction is amusing; if I can tape it one of these sessions, I will. Let's hope for a speedy recovery!

Poor piggies, I pray for their health and speedy recovery. Just wondering, how old are they each?

Sorry your boys are under the weather. Has Deo shown other signs of a respiratory infection? Just wanted to make sure he had his teeth checked (the back ones) as a problem there would be a common cause of not eating proeprly and acting lethargic.
A course of twice daily antibiotics sounds like a good plan if everything else has checked out. Has Deo's weight stayed constant? If it's dipping, I'd definitely supplement with some syringe feeds as it's scary how quickly they can lose weight if they're not eating properly.
Some people choose to give a probiotic to protect their digestive system from the effects of antibiotics. You can get special ones for animals but you can also use ones made for humans (which would probably be much cheaper). Just sprinkle some of the powder from a capsule onto a bit of cucumber - to be given an hour or so after the antibiotics. If their poos look normal, it may not be necessary, but keep an eye out for squishy ones.
Get better soon Deo!

All digits crossed for both boys! I hope they are much better, really soon. Are they taking Baytril? That's nasty stuff. They boys will be happy when they take their last doses! Definitely take them back for a follow up with the vet, once the meds are done, to make sure the Upper Respiratory Infection is gone. URIs can really hang on. I lost my first pig to one, because I didn't know one round of Baytril might not do the trick, and the vet never said anything about bringing him back for a follow up.

I lost my first pig to one, because I didn't know one round of Baytril might not do the trick, and the vet never said anything about bringing him back for a follow up. On the bottle, it says "Sulfameth/Trimeth". It's probably just as nasty as Baytril. They squint their eyes and move their mouths in a rapid "bleah, bleah, bleah" fashion. Just a little follow-up: Deo seems to be a little better. He's out of his pigloo a bit more, and is trying to eat his hay. We're only about 3 days into the medication, so there's still some ways to go.

That's Bactrim, which all of my pigs have loved! It's also not the normal med prescribed for URIs, so maybe the vet thinks the sniffles and sneezing or something else. Did the vet say anything about allergies, or how the lungs or sinuses sounded?

The poor little loves, I do so hope they are better soon love. No I have never had a piggy who hasn't had to visit the vet at sometime or another. Ours have their claws clipped and teeth checked once every two months because we are both as blind as bats, so they are quite familiar with the vet, or nurses I should say as they do at a much cheaper rate. I am glad Deo has perked up.

Did the vet say anything about allergies, or how the lungs or sinuses sounded? He didn't mention allergies, but he said things are not as bad they could be. One small worrisome update- I noticed Deo isn't pooping. I cleaned out his cage a day ago and he's only urinating. He IS eating, though. In any case, I'm calling the vet again tomorrow to see if he can see Deo again. I hate to be pesky, but I need to know what to do.

Not pooping is a really good reason to see the vet again - I can't imagine he'll consider you as being pesky. It probably indicates he's not eating as much as it may seem, in which case he'd need supplementary feeding (the vet should have some sachets of powdered feed). But if the vet can see him to eliminate the possibility of a blockage or some other cause, that'd be ideal. Fingers crossed, hope you can get to the bottom of it and get him back on track.

I don't have male guinea pigs but maybe impaction?

If it's bloat, which is gas and related to impaction, which is constipation, and he is eating, try stroking his sides. Granted, I had to do that for almost 3 hours once, before my Zippy popped his cork, and when he did, ooh, the smell, but once he was past the bloat, he was pooping freely. I think he lost 50g just getting rid of all the food that hadn't passed through. Also, Petco sells Bene-bac, which is a probiotic powder you can sprinkle on food. It helps rebuild the good gut bacteria the antibiotic is killing. Impaction and bloating are unfortunate side effects of the antibiotic killing off the good bacteria that helps them digest their food. Get the Bene-bac for small animals: www.petco.com/product/106421/PetAg-Bene-Bac-Small-Animal-Powder.aspxI don't know if you've checked this Guinea Lynx page. This is why I was curious about anything the vet said about the lungs, etc. www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html
