Sorry about getting back a little late- I had lots of things I had to do- but Deo is on his way to recovery. The vet was not in, but a technician told me to stop giving him the medication and make him eat as much water-filled vegetables as possible. She also recommended string beans for fiber, but Deo gnawed briefly on one then ignored it. 3Piggles, I took your advice about Bene-bac and bought a bag. I took a tiny amount and coated a carrot lightly with it. Deo snatched it up and wolfed it down. I had to run some errands, but when I got back Deo was starting to poop. I am relieved, as is Deo, presumably. Everyone, thanks for your concern- I appreciate it- along with the advice.

There is nothing nicer than hear that a friend's piggy is on the mend. You get that lovely sigh of relief in your tummy that everything is OK. Please give him a kiss from his Auntie Jo Jo and tell him he is a very brave little boy.

Excellent If you use the Bene-bac, he should be able to handle the meds just fine. You can also give him Fennel/anise, and radish to help with his digestion. I wouldn't give him beans, as they are very gassy, and he doesn't need gas if he is already plugged up.

Glad Deo is pooping again - hope the benebac helps his digestion keep on track.

Another update- The vet called and recommended baby food if Deo was not drinking enough water, so I bought some carrots and spread it on some lettuce for him. He seemed to like it, as he adores carrots. Although his energy levels have returned, he's spent most of his time inside his pigloo and won't come out, not even for water. I was also not sure if he was pooping again. In any case, tonight we were reaching inside his pigloo and petting him, and he was purring like a fine-tuned engine. Later he came out and started drinking water again. He spent some time outside his pigloo and ate some hay and a tomato, and now is back inside sleeping. I'll check him in the morning to see if he's pooping again, but all in all, he seems to be getting back to normal.

Glad Deo seems to be slowly returning to normal. It does still sound like something is going on to cause him discomfort, so I hope the antibiotics can see it off. If the poops haven't increased much or he's lost any significant amount of weight then I'd definitely get him back to the vet to see what else they can do to help.
Cucumber is a great one for getting water into a pig who's not drinking enough - not many can resist it!
Get well soon Deo.

Cavylady, guinea pigs can eat natural baby food, but not baby food with sugar added. If you look at the selections, there are some that have no sugar or salt added, and are basically pureed veggies. Those are fine. I was also going to suggest the cukes, as they have a lot of liquid in them, are a good way to get more Bene-bac into him, and can go in pigloo. Bell pepper is also good. Definitely avoid the green beans

A very good option is to steam veggies until they are soft, let them cool, then run them through a food processor or blender with enough pellets to make a mash. You don't need many veggies, maybe half a carrot to a cup of pellets, and that will help you spoon or syringe feed a sick pig for a while. Also veggie and fruit juices mixed with pellets in a food processor or blender, depending on how thin the mix needs to be to fit through the syringe. Again, natural juices, not processed, salt/sugar added, etc. Those juices are expensive, but you only need a small bottle. In a pinch, for a dehydrated, sick pig, syringe feed Pedialyte, found on the baby/children's aisle at supermarkets and department stores. They don't need much, but the electrolytes in the Pedialyte helps rehydrate them, and the liquid is gentle enough for baby's stomachs. Obviously, don't use it any longer than you have to. As with a sick baby, it helps hold them over until you can get them to a doctor. Lastly, some vets stock it, and it's available online; Critical Care in the US, I think there is a different brand in the UK/EU. It is a fine grind of enhanced pellets that can easily be mixed with fruit juice, Pedialyte or water to form a slurry that can be fed through a syringe. It's for very sick pigs, but for less sick pigs, it can be mixed with baby food and served on the end of a spoon. It's messy on a spoon, but they get a thicker mash that helps gives them more nutrition. www.oxbowvetconnect.com/vets/products/critical_careIt comes in two grinds. The fine grind is the only one that fits through a syringe.

You should be able to get a steamer insert for a regular sauce pan, you can microwave them until they are soft enough to mash, or if you have a colander/strainer that fits in a pan, put them in that and boil water in the pan until they are soft enough to mash/a fork goes through them easily. Anything that keeps the food out of the boiling water, and allows the steam to get to the veggies, works as a steamer. I have several different kinds, from a metal insert that looks like a flower with petals that open up, to a Chinese steamer set in bamboo. Sometimes I use a strainer. We also have steamer bags for the microwave, which is mainly what I use now.

The vet gave me a syringe, but the syringe is HUGE and I can't stick it down Deo's throat with the prescribed amount- he'd choke! So, I coat a piece of lettuce and let him feed at his leisure. At first he avoided it, but now he doesn't give it a second thought. I am still worried about him, though. He just lies in his pigloo all day. He doesn't eat much, except for the veggies I feed him. Sometimes though, he acts normal- just when I really start to worry, he comes out of his pigloo and walks around. He'll even try to eat hay. But it doesn't last, and he'll head for his pigloo again. He whines occasionally, but if I pet him, he purrs and quiets down.

I just want him to go back to normal again, I'm worried.
