...I swear, this will be the last! I went w/the Oxbow pellets, mixed in w/the Carefresh pellets I had, put in vac seal containers, so I have enough to last quite awhile. Anyhow, my ? is concerning dried fruit treats. Are these safe in moderation? I ask because of a diabetes issues...are Pigs prone to diabetes like dwarf hamsters? As you may know, been out of the Pig game for a long time, but had/have hamsters, so learned a lot I didn't know about that when I started. As for real fruit, I'm going to try some strawberries, kiwi and orange, see how that goes. I know I can't eat fruit of any sort because, lucky me, first person on either side of family to have diabetes. Man, I miss bananas and orange juice.

I wouldn't give dried fruit at all - not only is the sugar more concentrated than in fruit (which should only be given occasionally - a couple of times a week perhaps), the consistency of them means they tend to stick to the teeth so could be even more damaging to teeth. Any of the 'treats' you can buy for them in pet shops tend to be completely unnecessary and often not very healthy for them. The best sorts of treats are things like some freshly picked grass - something which they will go nuts for but is also good for them.
I'm not sure if pigs are especially prone to diabetes - I've heard of a few, but not loads. I expect a lot of vets wouldn't think to look for it though, so it could go undiagnosed even where there are relatively clear symptoms. Sorry you have been diagnosed yourself - hope the dietary changes you're having to make bring positive health benefits. I can see fruit juices would be bad as all the fibre is taken out so it's just a sugar assault on your body, but would have thought bananas would be okay in a moderate quantity? Just curious, I'm not a dietician so please don't eat a banana on my say so!
And if you have more questions, please do ask away! It's great being able to bounce ideas off other people regardless of how much experience you have - that's what we're here for, after all!

I totally agree with Bean. I haven't heard of pigs getting diabetes, but it could be because few vets recognize the symptoms, or they recommend the pig be euthanized instead of treated. This is the Guinealynx section on diabetes: www.guinealynx.info/links.html It sounds as if you are doing everything right.
