I have three Giant African Land Snails arrive today and they are gorgeous. I scrambled some egg for them on their arrival as they were hungry little chaps and they love egg. They are now sleeping peacefully after a long journey here. I adore them. I know I should have let them settle straight in but I did hold one little chap and he came out to see me, not shy at all which is good. Hugs JO xx

Thanks for your kind replies friends. My snailies are juveniles at the moment, only a couple of months old. Yes, I am still learning about them, not an expert by any means yet. Scrambled egg (with no seasoning) is a real favourite but only to be given about once a fortnight so please do tell your sister Bean hunny, snailies see it as such a treat. When they arrived on Friday, I did them some and they tucked in after their long journey and then slept. They have had another little eat today and gone back to sleep, tired little snailies.
Many thanks for your interest, it is much appreciated. Will keep you updated.
Love and hugs Jo xx

I'll let my sister know, Jo, but I can't see her rustling up scrambled egg especially for them - she looks after them well but their home with her isn't the luxury hotel yours will be enjoying! I think courgettes are a favourite of her snails.

Aw, I hope she spares the time to cook them a bit of egg when she knows how much they love it and thanks Bean honey for the courgette tip, I would like to try the piggies and bun with that too because they love cucumber and if I am right, it is part of the same family. Yes my beasties are rather spoilt but I don't think I am alone there LOL!! Thank you Piggles love, they seem very happy at the moment.

Cool. I know nothing about pet snails though, but I'm curious. How big do they get? How long do they live?

jolovespiggiesInteresting choice of pet. How did you get from fluffy and cute guinea pig to slimy old snail? I can't see the attraction of snails myself, I've only ever heard bad press about these African ones. Ferocious eaters I believe; will eat anything. I hope you've got them in a reinforced tank ?

They are not slimy old snails, well perhaps a little bit slimy but that doesn't stop them from being cute. I have cockroaches and hermit crabs too and in the past I have had all sorts of unusual pets including snakes, lizards, praying mantids, millipedes and at one point I even had a couple of Rhino beetles. I have had many frogs as well, they make lovely pets. I also have a Tarantula called Fluffy and she is adorable. Yes they are hungry little things and I have to top the food up quite often and they are in a secure tank, for their sake not mine. All my pets past and present have been adored.
To answer your question Butterfly hun, they grow to about five inches and live for about 6 years.

You need to load the pictures to a photo management site such as Photobucket. Have you done that, or are you loading them directly from your computer? I've never found a setting small enough coming directly from my computer. I use Photobucket. Check this section: wheekers.proboards.com/thread/6185/posting-pictures

Oooh well done Jo - full marks for getting the pictures posted, hope it hasn't been making you scratch your head all day!
The colours of the hissing cockroaches are really striking. Nice to see some of the babies too - glad they are doing well.
I've not heard of leaf cockroaches before - they have big feelers don't they?
It must be fun having all these different creatures under your care - it's really interesting for us to learn about them too. Do the different types of cockroach have different favourite foods or are their diets pretty similar?
I'm very excited to see you posting pictures, I'll be checking your other threads for updates!

Thank you Bean love for such a lovely post. Yes I am rather pleased with myself and it isn't often that happens, I cannot believe it actually worked but I do know how I did it. The trouble is the next time I come to do it I will probably have forgotten again LOL. The hissing cockroaches are Mr Alfie and Mrs Rosie Cuddle-bugs, the Leafies are Mr Monty and Mrs Debbie Cuddle-Bugs and Fluffy the spider is Mrs Fluffy Cuddle-Bugs. The Hermit crabs are The Family Hermie-Hugs and the snails are Mr Sidney, Mrs Hetty and Mrs Smedley Snaily-Hugs. You are all going to talk about me now aren't you LOL? All cockroaches eat pretty much the same type of food only I thought they ate meat, apparently not. The lady I bought them from says they are not meat eaters at all. Yes it is interesting hunni having all these creatures to look after and they are adored as well, If I were younger, fitter and richer I would have a good deal more. Thank you for your interest, it is much appreciated.

You are all going to talk about me now aren't you LOL? No more than we did already?! Ha! I think it's great they have such super names (Hermie-higs is my favourite!) - oh it's a lucky beastie of any variety that ends up being a part of your family! You should practise your new photo posting skills while it's still fresh - there's plenty of your little friends we haven't seen yet!
