I think the definition of cruelty is starting to change, and animals lovers make a lot of noise about animals having the same feelings we have. It won't stop the cruelty, but it gives the authorities more options for arresting people, seizing animals and prosecuting abusers. Now to get fines and prison sentences that really carry some weight, instead of the typical slap on the wrist and suspended sentence.
Cavylady, I knew a man who owned an elephant and a lioness. He tried to bring them to his home, which although it was in a rural location, wasn't that rural. The neighbors complained about the elephant trumpeting, about the prison-like fence around the house, and about the lion on the other side of the prison-like fence. He had planned to build a house, barn, etc. in the back of the property, away from the neighbors and the street, but the neighbors made such a stink, he had to relocate both animals. I don't know that a lion and elephant are any worse than some of the other exotic animals kept as pets, from capybara to primates to sloths. I don't understand why humans can't enjoy animals in their wild habitat, instead of trying to make them into pets. The elephant was in the movie Jumanji, if you ever saw that. She also appeared in republican political rallies. She's trained, and is a working elephant.

I'm not to fond of sea world either, working elephants are usually abused, along with dolphins and killer whales and other sea life there at sea world there kept in small water areas compared to a bathtub compared to their size and none of the dolphins have ever died from old age there they only live a few years in captivity and are forced to do tricks just to be able to eat and than people wonder why they kill their trainers/feeders. I absolutely do NOT support sea world!! Plus they are bord out of their minds they ram there heads against the walls cause there so bord some animals have died cause there so bord imagine being so bord that you commit suicide! Many of the animals are artificially inseminated one animal at sea world was artificially inseminated over 7 times failed to conceive on 8th try she was pregnant and baby died at birth and they continue to try to inseminate these animals.absolutely will never go to sea world and will fund any charity that is trying to put them out of business!

I think it's important we know what goes on behind the scenes so we can decide if we think inflicting all that misery is worthwhile for an entertaining/ cute show. More and more people are realising they don't think it's worth it.

As much as love flumps (my pet word for elephants) I would never want to own one as a pet. I adore them and would love to visit Daphne Sheldrake's Elephant home in Africa, where I would be able to pet them.
I don't support Seaworld either but have to admit to wanting to swim with dolphins but in their natural habitat.

I've seen Tanya go through her routines, and I can assure you, she is not abused She was one happy elephant, she loves her trainer (no barbs or anything use on her), and loves her daddy. If anything, she was a success story. She had a whole area with barn and exercise area, etc. She just trumpeted when her daddy went near her habitat, and the neighbors complained. Not sure what she's doing now. Sea World needs to find a way to raise money without imprisoning animals. I think it's abusive to keep them in captivity that way, yet the medical facilities at the different Sea Worlds do wonderful work for the wild sea creatures. The lifespan of a Sea World prisoner is definitely shorter than it could be, though Sea World argues that the wild has so many predators and disasters, not all of the wild creatures live very long either. There has to be a better way. I think zoos need a whole lot of oversight they aren't getting, and laws requiring them to place their excess animals, not kill them. That baby giraffe killed and butchers in front of a group of school children in Scandinavia was disgusting and totally unnecessary. They said it was done regularly to regulate the size of their herds. Other small zoos and animal centers had requested the baby giraffe, but since the zoo couldn't vet those places in time, they thought it was better to kill it, and use the whole thing as a teaching exercise. I don't know that it's not done in US zoos, too, and we just haven't heard about it

Does anyone know how long a guinea pig live in the wild??

Much less than a domestic guinea pig - they're exposed to the elements, easy pickings for to predators, food/ water supply may not be reliable and the certainly won't have someone bringing them food when they're old. They're also more prone to cancers in the reproductive organs from constantly reproducing.
I'm not sure on an exact number, but I'd guess many wouldn't get past 3-4 and a lot would die younger than that.

Curiosity is an excellent trait! At least that's what I think, but other people might not when I'm always throwing random questions at them about what they do/ think!

I totally agree with curiosity being an excellent trait. I like to learn, and find the Internet a great source of general information. I don't believe everything I find, lol

How to get people to believe anything that isn't true. Act intellectual and throw in a few big words.

For a long time, if it appeared in print, it was true. Now, if it appears on the Internet, in a news broadcast, or spouted by a favorite religious leader, it's true. No one asks for proof. People believe what they want to believe, what their friends or mentors believe, and never question.

I like just surfing the net and picking up bits and pieces. It is true though you certainly cannot believe everything you read. I find I learn something new every day and I enjoy that.

I really like that I can google totally unimportant stuff I happen to think of, such as what was the first monster movie (It Came From Beneath The Sea), I can google important things from recipes to reviews of products I'm thinking of buying, compare prices of items I'm thinking of buying, etc. Those items, such as the price for a specific car at several different dealerships, or the cost of a medical procedure at different hospitals, can make a big difference. We also google directions/time/distance for a trip, and other really helpful things. The other night, we were looking for a specific musical instrument online. We saw it on some concert footage, and it sounded like an instrument I'd heard on some old Celtic recordings. I googled old Celtic instruments, and found it, with a great explanation of how it's made and and how to play it. I'm sure that information is in a card catalog somewhere, but we'd never get around to checking.

It is brilliant for that isn't it love? I have silly sessions on here too where I ask about and look up totally none important things but often things I have wondered about for years and have never managed to obtain an answer to. It is great for cooking and recipes and millions of other things too.
