I always used to call cottage pie shepherd's pie so it is probably something quite recent even here.

It tends to be a word Irina love which means "simple" or easy in the cooking world. I can see why you thought of cottage cheese.

I did not know that, Jo! Interesting. I don't think we have such a word, at least not in New England. Other regions of the US may have them. "Home" cooking usually refers to basic versus gourmet, but that's the only work that comes to mind.

A cottage cheese pie is not a pleasant thought!
I went to see Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo this week - didn't know much about them before I went but it's basically an American all male ballet troupe who, along with some serious dancing, do parodies of well known ballets. They were amazing dancers and it was very funny - much more entertaining than regular ballet.
I think they did something at the Superbowl ceremony so maybe some of you saw them on that?

Interesting, Bean. I'm not much of a ballet fan, and I don't recall them at a Superbowl game, but I'll google in and see UPDATE: Superbowl 2009! You were right

I didn't realise it had been so long ago, I might try to find some footage and see what they did! Like you, I'm not a major ballet fan either (my mum did take me to see Swan Lake when I was a teenager [mainly because it my treasured jewellery box played a piece of music from it!] and enjoyed it, but didn't rush out to see any more!) but this was jolly good fun!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sometimes the way we're introduced to things taints our future feelings toward them.

Hope everyone who celebrated had a good Halloween! We'd been out most of the day but got in and watched Gremlins and ate the sweets that we hadn't been in to give out to trick or treaters (not sure if there were any, but we missed them if there were!).

The kiddies don't come to us because we live in an area of what is called sheltered housing and many of the elderly people are afraid of opening the door at night but I always used to enjoy all the little ones coming around in their lovely costumes.

Great costume, Bazookgoof I wonder if any kids know who the character is? I know that movie well We had trick or treat from 6-8 p.m., but by 7, hubby and our neighbor came in and turned of the outside lights. Usually, we have wave after wave of trick or treaters for a good 90 minutes, but not this time. Now, we have a lot of candy left over, and it's not my favorite. I used to send in the leftover candy with hubby, before he retired.

Maybe your daughter will relieve you of it next time you see her? (We bought boxes of the individually wrapped chocolates hoping that we'd end up eating them ourselves!)

Leftover Halloween candy, the dieters nightmare A Croatian friend was telling me about a Croatian Catholic tradition her grandparents brought with them to the US, of lighting a candle for every loved one who died, on All Souls Day. She said it's November 2. They use small candles, like votive candles, and add one for each new person who dies. It sounds like a tradition that would give comfort to those who have lost loved ones. Just a simple way to remember them once a year.
