Hello All!
I am new here and have already gotten some great advice on what to do when my newest piggie family member unexpectedly gave birth. Thanks to everyone for the info and very warm welcome! Now to meet my piggies
Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment Deleted
The first photo is Luna. She was our first adopted female piggie. The second photo is Blackberry. We purchased her from a pet shop after not being able to locate any other females to adopt. Blackberry, unbeknownst to us, was pregant and gave us little Eclipse in the third picture a month after we brought her home. Blackberry gave birth to eclipse on the night of a blood moon full lunar eclipse!
Luna will be a year old in November and I am guessing that Blackberry is only about 3 to 4 months old. Eclipse is now 3 weeks old and about half the size of his mom already! He is moving full time into his own cage tomorrow until he is old enough to be neutered and and the whole herd can live together.
I am excited to be here to learn from and get to know all of you experienced piggie parents!

They are gorgeous Eclipse will be okay, until he's old enough to be neutered. Then he needs to stay in his cage for 4-8 weeks, just to make sure he's completely sperm free. Most people feel 4 weeks is enough, but some have pushed for 6 or 8 weeks, just to be sure. I guess there have been cases of boars impregnating sows as long as 6+ weeks after neutering, but I've never had that happen.

Aww aren't they all gorgeous and what an adorable little troupe they will make, thanks for posting pics! So hard to imagine poor little Blackberry having Eclipse inside her when she's so tiny herself. but really glad it all turned out well and Eclipse (love his name!) is so sweet and fluffy!

We were definitely preparing ourselves just in case Blackberry couldn't get him out. I was surprised at just how quick her delivery was. We were lucky enough to be able to witness it!

Oh wow, lucky you - I've never had that experience, it must be amazing to see and make that baby even more special to you.
The last babies we had (like yours, a female that had already become pregnant before we adopted her) seemed to take forever to come. We'd had her for over two months so it was obvious she was about to pop, and every day I'd run up to the cage to see if the babies had appeared, but nothing! When they finally did appear (I found them all clean and dry snuggled by mum so it must have happened a few hours before) I still nearly had a heart attack from the surprise/ shock though! There were three of them too, so having adopted two guinea pigs (the other female luckily wasn't pregnant) I suddenly had five!

It was really amazing that we were able to be there! She let out two unusual squeals and then delivered him within 10 mins. If not for her squeals, I'm sure we would have missed it.

Yes, 10 minutes for us would be AMAZING!!! That was definitely not my personal experience either. I was able to get part of the birth on video. I waited until he was out to start filming - I didn't want to scare her. Plus, they are both jet black and it was hard to see what was going on inside the pigloo. But, I was able to capture her cleaning him up and his first little movements.

They are doing much better. Thank you so much for asking! Luna is a lover and can't get enough cuddles. Blackberry seems to be doing well after the separation. She was actually beginning to get irritated with his final attempts at nursing. Little Eclipse is really growing and has come to accept his new home. He can still see mom and Luna. We allow them time together ONLY when we are holding them. They seem to enjoy their cuddles.

I am so pleased to hear all is well and you have snuggly piggies, I am afraid mine just tolerate it but as we always say, they are all different and we didn't have any of ours from babies.

We were lucky enough that Luna came to us with a people attachment. She makes the sweetest sounds when we hold her. She will even sometimes beg to be rubbed or picked up! We are hoping that little Eclipse will be the same since he will be with us from birth.

My Morty was like that, so I know it's so nice not to have to get them to trust you, because they are already accustomed to people. That's wonderful
