Aww, you're breaking my heart. It's so tough and you just do the best you can. It's very hard to know that you're going to lose your pet soon, but as you say, as long as they're happy...that's really all you can wish for. I've managed to keep Melvin's weight at around 920 grams, but he used to weigh over 1100 grams, so it's a big loss. It's very sad.

It is sad, esepcially when we remember how they used to be. The vet was going to give Morty a prescription for Baytril, which is a horrid tasting antibiotic, and I said No. I said it felt like punshing him, knowing how little time he might have. She said she would check for other antibiotics that didn't taste as horrid, but for now, he's getting his foot soaked, getting the salve applied and getting the anti-inflammatory. Hopefully, he'll get better. If not, I'll ask for Bactrim, which may not be as powerful an antibiotic as Baytril, but is better than nothing, and piggies love it.

So Melvin has been doing pretty well lately. He gained a little bit of weight, which made me really happy. He stopped wanting the Critical Care although I tried mixing it with all kinds of good stuff, but his weight stayed the same or even went up a bit after I stopped feeding it to him. The last couple of days he's been losing weight again though, so now I'm worried again. He still seems happy and eats hay and veggies, I think I'll try some critical care again and see if he will eat some.

Happy New Year to you and Melvin, too Try mixing the Critical Care with a baby food veggie he likes, and see if that helps get him to take the CC. Keep the baby food all natural. Good luck

So after a while where I managed to stabilize Melvin's weight, he has started losing weight again. He still eats well and I still feed him Critical Care + his normal hay, pellets and veggies. I'm really worried about him and some days I don't think he feels good. I don't know - maybe it's just the way he looks (when they get really skinny, they just start looking kind of sad. Not sure if that makes sense). But then...suddenly he will run around and popcorn. It's a tough situation, because you know what's happening, Anyway, I just thought it was time for an update.

I'm glad he's still running around and popcorning. I think you need to accept the weight fluctuations, give him the critical care or alfalfa, and let the weight take it's course. He seems to have periodic rallies with the weight, which is great! Be happy for the small things. Melvin is a happy guy. He popcorns and still runs around. He eats and enjoys it. He enjoys his time with you, and you with him. That's what it's really about. We can't stop things from happening to them. We can get them all possible help, but ultimately, it's about them enjoying life. He's enjoying life Hugs

I love seeing them popcorn or even run around, it is the sign of happy piggies and it does my heart good.

Thanks for asking. Melvin is doing ok. His weight is now only between 850-870 grams, but he eats well and seems ok. I just bought a big bag of Critical Care and he loves it when it's mixed with baby food :-) The lump doesn't seem to grow, which I imagine is good, so I'm just trying to get his weight to stabilize a bit and then hope for the best. The biggest problem right now seems to be his soft poo. He walks in it and I have to wash his feet quite often. It's not a big deal to me, but it can't be very comfortable for him.

If you have a food processor, or even a coffee grinder, try rough chopping some hay to mix with the Critical Care. The baby food is not only a vegetable, but it's already pureed, so no roughage at all. If he's not eating enough hay to counter the veggies, he will have soft poos. Putting hay in with the Critical Care and baby food should counter that a bit. I'm really glad his weight is holding, and he's enjoying himself

He does eat hay and pellets, but maybe not enough. I'll give the grinding a try.

I wouldn't say he is better and I don't really think he will get better, but as long as he is happy and still eating, I'm ok with it. He used to weigh about 1100 grams and now he's about 850. He's so skinny, poor little dude., but he seems happy I'll keep you posted :-)
