Oh sweetie, I will wish that for you too, it is better than taking them to be PTS. One thing is certain, he will have the happiest last months it is possible for a piggy to have. Another great post Piggles sweetie. Lots of love to you both Whimsy.

I feel like Melvin has been doing ok this past week and his weight has been steady, but this morning I saw that he had lost some weight again, so I'm not happy about that. I had a little photo shoot with him today. I know I probably won't have him that much longer, so I thought it would be nice to get a few good pictures of him :-) Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

I'm sorry to hear his weight is dipping a bit, but what lovely photos - he's a gorgeous boy and it's obvious he's very much loved.

He is beautiful I'm glad you're getting some pictures of him. I know what you mean. I took a lot of Morty the last few weeks, so I had pictures to remember him. Hugs

It doesn't seem like there's any real changes. His weight still fluctuates a bit, but stays around the 800 grams at the moment. He's still eating well, but some days he has very soft poo and other days it looks more normal. Over all I think he's ok, but probably not great. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and as long as he seems happy, I'm happy.

So, something really strange happened last night. Melvin has actually been doing ok - he gained a little bit of weight, but he is hungry all the time. He can eat and eat and eat. It's crazy. Anyway, last night I was sitting with him and like I do every second day or so, I wanted to check his lump. It's kind of on the left side of his neck. I was feeling it and then it was like it burst. It was really weird. He started acting strangely...like trying to lie down, then get back up, like he couldn't get comfortable. I honestly thought he was dying, but he didn't seem like he was in pain. I sat with him for a long time and nothing changed, so I put him in his cage and gave him his usual evening vegetables. He ate some and then started to make himself comfortable in the corner of the cage. I checked on him a few minutes later and he was eating again. I had to go to bed, but set my alarm to check on him an hour later and when I did he had eaten some more and was sleeping. I checked one more time and it was the same. The lump had gone from one smaller one to a big soft kind of lump more on the side of his neck and chest. This morning he was acting fairly normal and he ate his critical care and veggies. I just got home from work and the lump is now more under his chin/ on his throat/ neck. It's big, but soft. It's so odd. He seems ok, so I don't know what to do. The whole thing is just so weird.

I'm no vet, but that doesn't sound like any cancer I've encountered. Morty's tumor started small. It didn't have a hard part and a soft part, just kind of a general lump. It grew slowly for a long time, than faster. It never burst, or even acted as if it could be drained. Did it drain into him or outside of him so you could clean out the wound? The vet would be interested in what came out of the wound, if it drained to the outside. If it drained to the inside, you might need to get an antibiotic, or a change in meds, just to prevent infection. I would definitely talk to the vet about it. I really hope he's okay, at least as okay as he can be

It drained inside, so he kind of has a pouch looking thing on his chest....like a pelican :-) You're right...it doesn't seem like a normal tumor, maybe a cyst? I will see how he is tomorrow and call the vet.

I just took a couple of pictures of him. I don't know if you can see the extra weight kind of on his chest. I don't know how to describe it, but it's quite big and soft - like extra skin or full of fluids. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

It does sounds odd - have you posted at Guinea Lynx to get some input from their experts before you get to the vet? If there is a collection of fluid of some sort, you definitely want to get it looked at so that if it a cyst or abscess that needs draining, you can do so before the contents get absorbed back into his bloodstream.
Like 3piggles, my experience of tumours is that they're fixed to the body, solid and only grow (whether it's slow or fast). Given the lack of certainty about what was going on before, this would seem like a really good opportunity to find out a bit more about what's affecting Melvin and if anything can help him.
Good luck and glad Melvin seems to be doing okay in general.

Wow! It looks like a dewlap on a rabbit! I've never experienced anything like that. Definitely get some medical expertise, and please let us know the outcome. I'm really curious just what's happening! Despite the dewlap, he's looking really good. He doesn't look as if the cancer is beating him. He's a beautiful boy

I have a vet appointment here in a couple of hours. I am a little nervous though, because the regular vet isn't there today, so have to see somebody else. They say he/she is an exotic vet too, but I've had bad experiences with other vets before, so I really want to see the lady who knows Melvin...and who I'm comfortable with. I'm actually thinking of calling and asking if she is in tomorrow.

If you don't think Melvin is critically ill, and you feel most comfortable with the other vet, definitely check for when she'll be in next. If she's not going to be in, at least this vet should have some knowledge of the situation, and might be able to suggest something. Then you can check with the other vet when she's back at work.

I called and she is not available until July! That's not going to work obviously. I will try this vet and see what kind of feeling I get when I'm there. I hope this new vet can help somehow. I'm really afraid that I have to make the dreaded decision soon to put Melvin to sleep. He might look ok in the pictures, but he is not doing really well. His breathing is raspy and he sleeps most of the time. Today he hasn't eaten as much as usual either. I just want to do what's right for him.

I felt incredibly lucky that Morty not only made it to the new year, to the day, but that he only really started going down hill a few days before that, and he went quickly and quietly when he finally did go. I hope Melvin can do the same, but I've had to make that call too many times over the years, and it's never easy. Lots of hugs. You love him too much not to do what's best for him. We're here for you
