Gosh, that would evoke different emotions - I was only 10, so although I got a whiff of the more serious issues, for us it was just mainly a jolly song with a good story rather than just random lyrics like a lot of the pop music of the time.
Glad you liked it, Jo.

Sun Kil Moon - "By the time that I awoke"

Gosh, he's really struggling to hit any of the notes (and what's that weird effect on his vocals?) - I'm finding it quite challenging to listen to without screwing my face up!
Just looked them up quickly and see they're at least partly a continuation of The Red House Painters who I know my husband used to love, so I'll have to see what he makes of it!
Here's my contribution for the morning.

Glad you also had trouble understanding/hearing the singer on the first video. I was wondering if the mic wasn't plugged in, or there was a problem with the acoustics. Yes, he did seem to have trouble hitting some of the notes, but I couldn't tell if that was intentional, as part of the presentation?
Definitely more toe tapping with the second video, but I liked the beat in both.

Just played it to fella - he wasn't so keen on that particular song but likes the band Sun Kil Moon and thinks Mark whatshisname can sing well. I've just been played one of his (apparently, never heard it before) favourite songs sung by him, which he thought demonstrated what a great voice he has, but it really grated on me as I just feel like he's a bit flat on a lot of notes and transitions.
Ah well, he can't understand what I like about Franzl Lang or Shed Seven either.

I liked the Grand Master Flash one, the other one was a bit drony for me.

One for the guys... My younger self never registered that she wasn't wearing a bra! Incidentally I was just listening to that thinking it sounded so much like Heather Small (from M-People) and it turns out it is indeed her vocal. Black Box originally sampled a song by Loleatta Holloway called Love Sensation for the track but didn't get permission from the writers before doing so. When it made it big and the writers caught up with them (they hadn't credited the vocals either) they re-recorded it with Heather Small. Apparently the lovely lady in the video was just hired as the image of Black Box and never contributed musically on any of their hits, she was just there to dance and lip-sync.

I like them both, and I don't usually like live performances.

I didn't know that abut that particular record hun, you do live and learn. I wonder what the real singer looked like.

Love the Earth, Wind and Fire video, but that's also more my era I figured the ladies were lip syncing, mainly because there was an awful lot of that going on at the time. I'm surprised it hit the fan so hard when it was made public, as everyone was doing it. The recorded version had no flaws. The performance was everything then. I remember people asking how Madonna could dance so hard and still not be winded when she sang The no bra look was a major step up from the see-through blouse era
