I do use the pine pellets under fleece, with a layer of fiberglass window screen in between. The type of screen I used feels more like netting than screen, and can be cut just short of the width and length of the cage, so it stays hidden by the fleece. My pigs have eaten the screen at times, with no ill effects, but I try to keep it away from them.
The instructions for the pine pellet horse bedding are to cut an X in the bag, water the pellets with a hose, and let them turn into granules. I've done both, as once wet, the pellets turn into granules, anyway. The pellets or the granules totally fight the odors. When I clean the cage, I push the granules around to redistribute them, putting the driest ones under the water bottles, where the most water falls. They also have some favorite pee places, such as right in front of the food/hay, in their houses, etc. Just redistributing the granules allows the wettest ones to dry out, and since the fleece and screen protect the granules from poos and all but the tiniest pieces of hay, the granules don't need to be replaced very often.
