Hi I am new and looked all through the forum to see if my situation fit with someone else's! My pregnant Sow is no longer wanting to be touched and runs from you! I am not sure how far along she is. She will not allow you to feel if the babies are moving and kicking etc! May anyone please help as I want to make sure she is okay and don't want to stress her out! This is a recent picture of her! Thank you for anyone taking the time out to read this and offer advice! Edit: I just took her out her cage to see if I can feel babies and she kept biting me and purring really loud when you touched her belly! Than she just kept biting me until I put her back. Ugh my poor baby this breaks my heart 😓

Ugh my poor baby this breaks my heart 😓 She's likely just being protective of her precious cargo. Once things are over she'll probably settle down.

Good advice Baz love. She is going to be a bit fractious at the moment Piggiemommy hunni. Being preggers she probably feels vulnerable too.

I think it's quite common for pregnant animals to want to be left alone. If she's eating and drinking well, moving around (albeit less than her non-pregnant pal) and seems otherwise okay then I wouldn't worry too much about her not wanting to be handled.
I would make sure that you have the number of a good vet (one who has an all hours service) in case she does get into trouble during labour. But otherwise, just make sure her diet is good (plenty of alfalfa based pellets), that she has safe places to retreat to in her cage, and keep your fingers crossed the next stage will be straight forward. I know it's hard waiting - I remember getting up every morning with Charlie and running to her cage to see if she was okay and if the babies had arrived. It seemed to take forever!
I'll move this thread over to the cavy care section (it's in general chat at the moment) - hope you find it okay!

Thank you so much guys! I just want to make sure I am doing the right things in taking care of her because this wasn't planned! I have her on Alfalfa hay and Timothy hay also she is on Oxbow for Young Cavies as I found out it was good for young piggies! Plus she gets green and red lettuce bell peppers ( red, green, yellow ) cherry tomatoes watermelon on occasion plus apples oranges cantaloupe grapes on occasion. Spinach kale carrots etc. I will leave her be till she gives birth and hopefully she goes back to snuggling me I miss those days as my boar hates to snuggle

Also someone told me to not keep her babies as she will become aggressive if I decide to keep a female because she will think I'm hurting her baby like if I go to hold the baby when the baby is past the 21 days of nursing

That's interesting - I've never heard that before, and it's not been my experience either (albeit a limited one of having guinea babies).
Play it by ear, but guinea mums are usually pretty laid back about you handling their babies. It's not something I would be worrying about - the main thing is to correctly sex them so you can get the boys out of there at 3 weeks!

I hear sexting the babies is extremely hard! And I never heard of that either I actually looked at them like they was a little crazy 😜 I am not a cavy expert but I'm starting to really pick up things fast, I mean I have to hence I'm going to be a grandma very soon 😂

When they're first born, it probably won't be clear to anything but the expert eye, but after a couple of weeks, it becomes more obvious. And if in doubt, get a good vet to check so there's no room for error!
I've given immediate gender reassignment to several guinea pigs belonging to friends and acquaintances (one was a few years old, and they'd had her since being a baby), so if you can tell boy from girl now then you're doing better than many!
Sorry, but your typo of 'sexting' the babies made me laugh!

And thank you I have to give all the credit to guinealynx as their sexing is so much more informative than any other! And I appreciate everything and all the warm advice and help! It's so great to have found a wonderful forum with such polite people and knowledgeable too. It makes it so much more comfortable in raising my babies. And by the way I saw the babies kicking 😁

Aw, it has to be such cool to see the babies kicking! I just feel badly for the poor mom, who really had no say in the whole process. I hope she has a really easy delivery, though by the time she's close, I'm sure it won't happen soon enough You may not be able to get Snuggie and Mr. C back together, but that would give the baby boars someplace to go, when they have to leave mom. Boars must be separated from the rest of the family at 3 weeks old, so hello Mr. C. You get roommates

Boars must be separated from the rest of the family at 3 weeks old, so hello Mr. C. You get roommates Yes it was so neat to see them kicking as she doesn't allow you to touch her. But she is getting more and more sleepy each day and now lays down to eat all her food! I feel so bad for my baby girl and hope she is coming near a end very soon as this looks so difficult on my precious baby girl. And Mr. C actually will be reunited with Snuggie very soon well in about 2 months as he goes in 5 days to be neutered than it is just the waiting time for the sperm to die than the time Snuggie needs alone with her babies than he will be joining his wife again. I tried this evening to place a cardboard box in between their cages as they each have their own and he was not well with it at all he yelled at me for a straight hour crying and wheeking and giving me uncomfortable looks 😂. So my husband finally said to take the cardboard down and he stopped just like that walked up to Snuggie they kissed through the cage he laid down next to her side of the cage and went to sleep 😊. So even though he is a horney little man and bites his cage thinking he is Hercules he can't escape and get to her as he is in his own cage and she is in another. I don't think he realizes that lol. But fingers crossed they will be reunited soon as long as his surgery goes well

I can understand your concern hunni but please try not to worry, it looks as if she is having a hard time walking around which she is, but she is a very happy girl knowing she is going to have some babies. You have a real treat in store sweetie, baby piggies are just the best. Thank you so much for your updates and I hope she has her little ones soon. My husband and I call baby piggies "Choaties." Don't know why but it just suits them somehow.
Hugs Jo xx

Oh how cute you've seen the babies kicking! Hope that's reassured you. Good luck with the old snip too. Make sure he has some pain meds after - I find the first 24 hours are the worst with them looking rather sorry for themselves, after that mine have all bounced back pretty quickly. Plus have some kind of heat pad/ hot water bottle to help keep him warm if he needs it - some animals struggle to keep their body temperature up after surgery. Of my last two who were neutered (doesn't that sound nicer than castrated?!) with one of them you'd barely have even know he'd had an op. The other, who's never been quite as robust, did need a bit more tlc and keeping warm for a day or so, but after that he bounced back too. Guinea Lynx has so much excellent information, I'm glad you found it. The sexing page at Cavy Spirit is pretty good too if you need any additional photos when the babies come!

I think you're right about him not realizing, or not understanding why he can see, here and smell her, but can't get to her. What will you do with any male babies, once they reach 3 weeks? Mr. C's daughters can stay with him and Snuggie, and he can have his own harem, but the boys have to be separated from the girls and from Mr. C, once he's back with the girls.
