The girls are looking fabulous! That is so wonderful. There is a look to a sick pig, and neither girl has it That is such a sweet gesture to the vets. I'm sure they are going to be really surprised and happy with the gifts. While it seems like torture to give them endless meds, and they often act as if it is torture, hoping we'll change our minds, animals know when what we're doing is for their health. Giving all those meds actually brings them closer to you much faster, than if you didn't have to give all those meds. Also, while the vet trips are a strain on them, they know, every time they go, you bring them back home. They know you will do that, and it adds to their trust. It's not a great way to have to do it, but at least, when you have to do it, it increases the bond between them and you, a great deal.

Hi Everyone! I hope you are all doing well I thought I would check in and say hi and give a few updates. Last weekend Tizzle had her 2 week follow. I went in feeling so good, she's been doing so well. And it was obvious, she'd gone down in size / swelling soo much. They did the X-ray to confirm her lungs were now clear and the gas that was trapped inside was gone too. Except neither of them were better. Her lungs are still so cloudy you can't see her heart and the gas is exactly where it was before. She pulled up both X-rays - the one from a few weeks ago when she was hospitalized and the current X-ray - and I couldn't believe how much could be in this little animal. I think I mentioned in this thread too... that if these didn't clear up with the meds, this could be a heart condition. And that's exactly what the vet has said. An MRI will confirm this and we can treat whatever heart condition that is causing these symptoms. She's doing so well though. She has energy and she's eating a bit more veggies now than before. They had me cut out the critical care this week, but she's losing weight. So just tonight I started it up again. She seems so little now. She's still taking 3 meds twice a day - Septra, Pro-Bi, and Reglan. She's on these for a combination treatment for the parasite Zelda has and continued treatment for her gas. She seems like such a happy chappy little pig though. You'd never guess she had this going on inside of her. And then there's my little Zelda. She seemed to be doing so much better!!! But the last few days I've been spending more time with them again, and she is in fact having trouble. I'm going to call the vet and see what we can do about taking her OFF these meds that I insisted she take, because they aren't helping. She's still taking 6 meds in the morning and 6 meds at night - for the parasite and the straining. I want to get her approved to go back to just treating the parasite. She's also getting larger. I'm concerned she's swelling up - then it goes down - then it happens again. I need to weigh her and compare her weight. She isn't as energetic. It makes my heart sad. For floor time today, I kept them out for an hour. The vet said they both need movement for the GI system. And Zelda barely did much other than eat hay. Tizzle was jumping around. But little Zelda just hung out in one of those Strawberry houses. So I'm bringing them both back in to the vet - Tizzle to get the MRI. Even though she appears to be a happy little piggy, I'd like to find out what's going with her heart so we can prepare before she takes a turn for the worse. And Zelda - this straining I think it just going to be what it is. But I'm worried about her size. The vet said the critical care could have bulked her up - but it's been a week without critical care for either of them and Tizzle is getting smaller and Zelda is getting bigger. However I'm hopeful for these two little ones. They have already been through so much. They are fighters! Hopefully whatever is going with Tizzle - some critical care will get her weight back up and that some meds will help her heart. And that whatever is going on with Zelda's size - the vet can help with that too. I just PRAY it's doesn't turn into what Tizzle had where she stopped eating and going to the bathroom and swelled up like a huge balloon. Thankfully Zelda is still eating and going to the bathroom, so that's a good sign for sure. That's our life at the moment. Hopefully I'll know more this week and everyone can be back on the mend!!! - Catherine

Thanks for the update, although I'm sorry to hear there have more downs as well as ups. It's amazing what these girls have going on inside them, yet they look so healthy and content. It must be great to see them generally happy and active though, and it must spur you on when parts of administering the treatment are tough.
Keep up the great work. x

Zelda definitely has a great mom. I'm sorry she's having more trouble, but I'm keeping all digits crossed for her to get clear of it all

I wish I could help. I sincerely do. I'm not a vet, but I feel like I have a lot of experience that could be helpful.
I'm low income so I really had to learn how to access help for my guinea pigs when they have health issues without the support of vets. The amount of things I've learned are large. I'm giving very very serious thought to looking into becoming a vet, small animals only.
I give my guinea pigs colloidal silver to prevent respiratory and urinary infections.
I have recently discovered Diatomaceous earth for mites and fungus treatment, external and internal, and for nutrient boost and better digestion, and the list goes on.
The heart condition is a very difficult situation...and a huge amount of caution is needed if using natural treatment because potency and the rapid effects could be life threatening rather than helpful. Meaning: Baby steps... because guinea pigs can have healing crisis just like humans - if the meds aren't working, it may be an opportunity to investigate other options very carefully for treatment.
