I never heard of a pool with a hoist, until a British friend told me about it. I don't think any public/hotel pools have hoists. That would be found in a rehab center. Pools here have ladders to get in and out of the pool. I have trouble getting up a step or two on a step ladder, so not at all sure I could manage to get out of the pool.
I think the Y has to be joined for a year, but it's payable by the month. Before I commit to something like that, I need to be sure we'll bother to go, that they have adequate parking that isn't a long walk(it's downtown), and that the public swim times are when we'd consider going, and not at the crack of dawn. I checked it out once before, but forget what I learned.
I used to belong to a health club with a pool, and used it all the time, after my work out. I was also in my 20s, so my physical considerations are quite a bit different now. I doubt I could use the workout equipment very much, at least not until I've been swimming for a while. I really have to get some joints working a whole lot better, before I can use work out equipment.

Way back in November I started the C25K program. Week 1 nearly killed me! I couldn't run to save myself Forward three months and I've finished the program. In week 9, I ran non-stop for 30 minutes three times. I didn't run very fast, but I 🏃♂ without stopping. That's my big achievement this month 😀

That's amazing, Shades! Are you planning to keep it up or are you looking for a new challenge now? Do you run outdoors as well as on a treadmill?
3piggles, it's a real nuisance you have to make such a big commitment before you know if it's going to work for you. At least the walking is free!

That's amazing, Shades! Are you planning to keep it up or are you looking for a new challenge now? Do you run outdoors as well as on a treadmill? I'm not killing myself so much to give up now I'll continue to run 30 minutes three times a week. Over time I hope to reach 5K. I don't know how long that's gonna take but that's my immediate target. I've not run outside. It's just too cold. I'll wait until spring comes to run around a public running track. The streets aren't really runner friendly. I'm more likely to get injured.

Excellent job, Shades! That's quite an accomplishment. The program worked for you, and now you can continue running at your pace, just to keep going Yes, Bean, it is. That's one reason why some fitness clubs offer an enrollment fee of maybe $10, and $10/mo for every month you attend. There's usually a grace period, such as you get to not attend for 3 months, before you need to enroll again. They don't have pools, though, just exercise equipment. Nothing wrong with that, except I don't know what would help or hurt me, while I know swimming is recommended for people with arthritis. I'm still looking into the Y. We need to take a trip past it, and investigate the parking situation, and I need a commitment from hubby to attend with me. I should also check out the pool, which means stopping and talking to people. I'd like to have hubby in agreement, before doing that.

Yes, swimming sounds like a much better thing to try than the gym! Plus you have your bike at home anyway, and your real bike when the weather improves - I bet tootling round the neighbourhood is a lot more enjoyable than sitting in a sweaty gym!
Sounds like a good plan, Shades. Do you watch stuff while you run if you're on a treadmill, or just listen to music?

That's why I'm investigating it, Jo. I need to do something to exercise my upper body, particularly my shoulders and neck. Biking and walking don't do that. I really need to get hubby to check out the Y with me, get my questions answered, etc. We don't have the money for a fancy club with indoor and outdoor pools, but a chance to swim some laps in an indoor pool would be better than not swimming at all.

clubs like that tend to be expensive here too piggles love. we have a swimming pool not far from here but it has all glass windows and would make me feel as if I were in a goldfish bowl. I would like to go on ladies only sessions but they are at night.

Are there any senior programs near you, Jo? One called Silver Sneakers is advertised on TV, and apparently is a lesser priced option through participating fitness centers. I don't think it includes places with pools, though. I'll have to check if there are any places around here that support Silver Sneakers, if there's an enrollment fee, and what's included. I would feel better at any fitness center, if I'm with more people my own age. Major wind gusts last night, started in late afternoon, and we lost power and Internet. We have a generator, so we got power back, but no internet until about 8:30 last night. Same system that hit Baz the day or two before. It's been wreaking havoc across the northeast. Almost gone, which is nice. Cold temps back, too, which for me is also nice. Without the TV interfering, I got to read a quite a bit of my book last night. It's about a 1925 unsolved murder in Kansas. Having been a newspaper reporter, I'm getting a chuckle out of the newspaper editors coverage of how people behaved at the trial. He did not mince words, lol

Jo, it's a program for seniors, people over a certain age. I certainly don't want to exercise as if I'm 20 anymore, and not even as if I'm 40. I need a program tailored to my age and health, not to younger people. Senior programs are less strenuous and lower impact, generally. They are more about maintaining mobility than about building muscle or trimming weight.
We had a fox come through this morning. Hubby got pictures of him/her. Beautiful.
The winds didn't do us any damage, but I guess a lot of tree limbs blew down, causing electrical failures, and some signs didn't fair too well. That's generally the case.

thank you piggles love, I am sorry to be such a silly billy. I would love to find an exercise programme for people like myself who are not just of a certain age but suffer from disability issues. I think I have only ever seen a fox once, they are very beautiful.

Oh we have a fox at the moment too. I know they've used our back garden as a cut through in the past, but since we tightened up the borders when we were fostering rabbits, I've not seen one in our back garden, only on the street at the front. But there have been a few times this week when we've seen one lolling around in the garden in the afternoon (apparently they're opportunistic feeders, so will come out whenever there are good pickings). Of course as soon as it gets wind of us, it scarpers within seconds! We saw it sunbathing among some shrubs in one of the borders. It looked so beautiful in the sun, but by the time my daughter had pegged off to get the camera to take a picture through the window, it was sloping off into the shade behind the shed.

They're stunning creatures. I hope yours found some food in the snow! My daughter loves squirrels - I found about 50 photos of this little guy on my camera (including a series of him cleaning his bottom...)!

Oh he is adorable bean sweetie. the way that gorgeous fluffy tail curls around his back I would love to cuddle him. I have heard that they can be quite aggressive though. I really love the one of his tummy and little hands. I have just melted.

Aw I love squirrels. I know they're a pain with the bird feeders, but they have as much right as any animal to try to survive the winter. A friend in CA has one as a pet. He found her as an abandoned baby, nursed her to childhood, and she's been with him ever since. She goes outside to play in the trees and on the roof, but always comes back in, when she's ready. She loves her daddy Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210, Jeremiah, and many others) had a massive stroke. He's either in an induced coma, or sedated, in a hospital. He's 52. So many people have commented how young that is to have a massive stroke, but it's really not. Several of my mothers cousins, all male, died of massive strokes in their 50s. I was in high school at the time, and it seemed as if she kept showing up to take me out to lunch, because she'd been to another funeral. Still, it's really sad, and I totally hope he makes a full recovery.

I love squirrels too darling and you are correct, they have as much right to eat as anyone else. that is lovely to hear of one being a pet, I didn't think it possible with squirrels. what i wouldn't give for a cuddle. yes, it is sad about luke perry, I remember him in the first film of buffy.

I didn't remember him being in Buffy, but I was more a fan of the TV series with Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. I do hope he recovers.
