I've had one cavy before, when I was like 8, and after a year or half a year, I told my dad 'Muffin is lonely, can't we get her a friend?'. and he said 'Yes', and I notice such an improvement in her, and they were happy girls. When CoCo had to be put to sleep due to molar problems(She was from PetCo, but I got her from a family that was giving her up), and Muffin really was done in the dirt. They are herd animals. I found that females are much better together than the males. Since when boars reach sexually maturity and they are in the same room as a female or females, they'll have fight. You might notice your pig will be lonely, but some pigs just hate other pigs, and you'll be their best-friend. Like my males pigs, I have 4, and all hate each other. They worship, Moca, my sow though. I've had cavies for 7 years, it's going to be like 8 years next year, and I found that the females were the best to keep together, and that cavies are social critters. When I get Storm, my second show pig, I had to have him with Casper, since I hadn't planned to get a cavy, but just found this beautiful American Satin Black Himalayan at the show I and my mom took Casper too. And they were getting along in the carrier- on the ride home. But not, Casper bites at Storm, and all my boars hate each other.
It depends on their personality, because I mean, I just can't stand certain people, and if placed in a area with them, I'd surely get into a fight, since if we were so different, it wouldn't be great. Yes, you have to see how your pigs personality is, and compare it to anothers. Abyssinians are one of the breeds that are most active, and ususally will do good together, since they got the 'hyped' gene in them.
It's kind of like a 'dating game' you have to play to see the matches for when you get your cavy. If one is shy, and the other is outgoing, sure they can get along. I had a friend that was really peppy and outgoing, and I was really shy, and she taught me to just be normal, and not just shy.
Sometimes opposite matches work, since not all cavies like other cavies the same as them, as in some ways, different prospectives in the cavy's interests, can interest the other cavy.
And even if re-introducing, I haven't found it works, my boars never will like each other, since they teeth chatter loudly at each other, and would probably kill each other if placed with each other.
Best to luck for you when you get your first cavy(or another cavy, if you had owned them before)!
