My friend and I each just got a guinea pig. The are both 5 weeks old females and from the same litter. Mine is named Tenna and my friend's is Bella. We give them fresh vegetables and fruits, but they don't ever seem to eat them. Is taht just because they don't like them or because they're new? Also, when I'm holding Tenna, she makes this purring sound and a soft oinking sound. She isn't trying to run away or anything, so is that a good noise? And lastly, sometimes when we have both of them out, the one will make this high pitched squeal then the other one starts making the same noise. What does that mean? Sorry for all the questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are probably just adjusting to their new environment. Those noises Tenna makes are good! They are communicating to each other - if they are litter mates they will do this. This has been moved to the appropriate section

Congratulations getting your new piggies They will start realising that veggies are nice, its proabably because they are just settling in. Just keep trying with veggies, but offer them small amounts to begin with, as any new food needs to be introduced slowly, so hopefully it won't upset their tum. Which veggies have you tried so far?

When we first got Snowy, she hadn't eaten veg before and she got Diarreah. We went to the chemist and asked for something to cure it for guinea pigs and she looked at us like we were crazy!

I gave them some oranges and Romain(sp?) lettuce. Last night I got them to eat some of the lettuce. Now they don't stop haha. Thanks for the advice.

Watch out on how many oranges you feed them though....it can cause ulcers from what I understand.

My pigger loves lettuce too . I have also heard that too many oranges can be unhealthy.

Romaine is good for piggies, not iceberg though, theres no nutrition and it can give them diarreah. They may like the odd baby carrot, red or green bell peppers are a wonderful vit c food. Cucumber is a nice treat. Any fruits need to be given sparingly, the natural acid can give them mouth sores. If fruit is cut up into small pieces, they are less likely to get mouth sores, but fruit should still be limited because of their sugar content. Kale, broccoli and parsley are good, but the kale and broccoli are gassy vegtables, so only small quanties should be given. Celery is a favourite, but needs to be cut into small pieces because its stringy. Do you have any photo's of your piggies.

The purring sound usually means they like whatever you're doing to them wheather it's petting them or a nice scratch behind the ear.

I gave them some cucumber today and they really loved it. I actually did know the thing about iceberg lettuce since it's the same with birds and I know more about birds then anything. But guinea pigs are a tad different then birds haha. I do have some pictures.. Tenna: and Bella: Bella likes to fall asleep when you pet her. She'll lay on her side and turn to jello haha.
