My Grizzly just loves his cage. He runs and plays in it all day. I usually take him out every other hour for floor time, but he just sits there. He might nibble on some fruit or veggies but he never moves. I have thought that he may be nervous and shy during floor time, so I placed him in a quite spot [supervised of course] and I sit and talk to him. If I'm cleaning his cage, and he's sitting next to me, he always tries to hop back in his cage. One reason for this, he's a real chicken [so to speak] but he's really curious and he loves people.
*ps- he is a male 6-7 month old abyssinian. I'm not quite sure of his age because he's a rescue pig. He is medium brown with gold tippings and a gold belly. I got him from the animal shelter that I posted earlier on about. I am currently looking for a companion for his but I haven't quite found the right one.

Well my guinea pigs all live in my room, they are basically used to the noises and atmosphere in my room so when I place them on the floor some exercise, they go CrAzY (especially Basil). But if I was to take him downstairs and place him in the living room, he does remain frozen for sometime until he has had a good old stiff of this 'New' Area. If a place may be new to them- all new smells and noises they can tend to get a little nervous.

As he's active in his cage, he may just be afraid of open spaces. Could you provide him with a few bolt holes while he's having free range time? Tunnels, plain boxes with an entrance hole (tape and staples removed) plus a couple of piggy igloos that you can buy. Also you could try hiding a few veggie treats under a sheet of newspaper etc as guinea pigs love searching for food. Its nice your looking for a friend for him as often two guinea pigs feel less afraid together and they interact together so they would move around more. I'm just popping this thread in the General Care forum for you. Good luck with little Grizzly

My girls don't do anything during floor time except huddle in a corner...unless...
I set up 'fleece city'! This was an idea discussed on wheekers last year. You cover the floor with some newspaper to protect it and then get a couple of cardboard boxes of tubes. Next put a piece of fabric (a towel, piece of fleece or old sheet) over the boxes. This will make a burrow for your piggy to explore. I do this whenever my girls have floortime. It makes them much more active.

Yep, as Jackie and Pollie said, making a fun little run would be a great way to give Grixxly some exercise. You can hide some of his favourite beggies around, and he'll also be entertained while trying to find them. Hope this helps!

Love the idea of 'Fleece City' Threelittlepigs might try that with my boys as they love snuggling under things! My piggies have different personalities too - though are both finding playtime an adventure at the moment. Pucca is more vocal & you only have to pick him up & snuggle him into your neck to get him purring! Garu on the other hand is quieter you can feel him purr sometimes but he rarely makes a sound - does a good job of rumbling at Pucca though! Lia

it took Honey a while to get used to being out in floor time, but keep putting your piggy out there in a certain pattern, and they should get used to it and not be so she.

Hey... My Chester-Darling is like the complete opposite... He's really not that active in his cage, but when I take him out for floor time he'll run and run, and run, and run some more, find a quiet place to stretch out, get his energy back and run some more... During his "run" he'll stop, stand up at the mirror, sniff my computer, clothes, and whatever else is on the floor... LOL!!

" eyes haha

Hello ... I got my first guinea pig just a while ago i have had him for 6 months now and ever since I got him he just sits there like he eats and drinks and pees and poops but he doesn't walk around his cage .. when i put him on the floor for floor time he will wonder around and then go sit in the conner till i put him away.. then about 3 weeks ago i jot this 2 month old piggy I named him nugget he is a teddy ,he crazy cute and just has so much energy. when i put them together nugget will encourage play and he has many toys to play with and small stuffy they will run and play on the floor and then after 15 minutes piggy ( the long haired pig) will go sit in the conners.. i have put them in the same cage ( my dad built me a 2 story ,lED light system and a ramp to go up and down) and nugget just wanted to play in the cage and cuddle with piggy but piggy is always getting annyoed with nugget .. i can never drain the little ones energy no matter how much running around or playing he dose. so how and i get the long haired pig ( piggy) to be more active

It sounds as if piggy is an older pig, and while he enjoys the company, he doesn't have the stamina Nugget has. As my Morty was getting really old, the girls ran circles around him. He enjoyed it, just didn't want to participate any longer. Have you had Piggy checked by a vet just to be sure he doesn't have any respiratory issues that might make it hard for him to sustain play? It's probably a good idea to do that, and generally have him checked for any possible illnesses or problems. Nugget sounds like my Zippy, young and full of energy, which is how Zippy got his name Enjoy them. They will sort out their living situation. They're not having problems. They're just radically different agents and energy levels

Welcome to Wheekers! I think many adult pigs can take a bit more stimulation to get them moving, and things don't keep their interest for as long - it's just a natural mellowing with age. I have 4 pigs aged between 3-5. When they were little, I'd only have to open their cage door and they'd jump out (I make it safe for them to do that) and trundle around the room sticking their noses into everything and chasing each other around. They'd stay out for as long as they could. Now they're all happy and active in general, but just not as fussed to be haring around - they'll sometimes see me open the door and just go back to chewing their hay. Other times they'll pop out, but just have a potter and see what I've put out for them to investigate, have a bit of a play and then go home. They love going out in the outdoor run when the weather's nice, but whereas before they'd gallop round in between mouthfuls of grass, now it's more of an odd burst in between eating and relaxing. Provided you're happy he's in good health and not lethargic because he's under the weather, just try to keep the environment as stimulating as possible (this is a great page of ideas) after that juvenile energy passes (where they can find anything and everything exciting!). If you look at the humans in our house, that's reflected quite well too - the kids can't sit still, but we find it quite easy and can get a bit weary with them doing endless cartwheels and playfighting when we want peace!

I checked that link, Bean, and had to laugh. I used to make Lego, or Duplo Block houses for Morty, which he would trash immediately. It was as if they were meant for destruction. He was such a big guy, not much survived him on a destructive rampage. He loved those houses. I could see his eyes brighten as he took off to level it as fast as possible It's true, as they get older, their energy wanes, and they are more satisfied with less activity. If you start with free-range pigs, who always total access to their cage and the floor, they tend to continue to roam a lot more. When my pigs were free ranging, they ranged right up to their last day, whenever possible. I found giving them a lot to keep them busy in the cage, keeps them happy to stay in the cage. I can't handle free ranging pigs any longer, so it's nice to have a space for them, that they really enjoy

I would love ours, when we get them to be totally free range but in our sitting room there are so many hiding places and you can bet your bottom dollar they would find them lol!

I can't do the cleaning up anymore, which is why I can't let mine run. If the whole house were lino, that would be different. Just sweep and damp mop. The rugs change that, and I don't want to have to buy new rugs. We have a lot of hiding places, too, and I used to fence those off at the other houses. Not as easy here, with the one big main room.

Ours could get behind and in the sofa or behind the bookshelf. The things we have blocked off for Holly piggy could easily get through is it is a real no no for us too love.
