For about three nights now it has been very hot at night. I keep the fan on, open the windows, and give her cool water. But i see somethimes he lays or just sits for a while in her litter box of shedded paper. Even though i clean it every day, the urine gets in to the new paper. I think it's so she keeps cool at night. Can i get some help.

I'd love for someone to respond to that also.
We are going through that with two of ours resting on pee piles. Also, our male, Sidney, appears to be purposefully emptying his water bottle into his cage and laying on it. He does appear to be drinking a lot, too, but the cage is soaked, and the bottle isn't leaking.
Is it just because it's been hot??

Might want to try a different litter for the box. Also, make sure that the fan is not directed towards her.

The cleanest and quickest way we keep our pigs cool in summer is with a frozen tile... Cheap and easy to pic up ex display ones from store and freeze quick in the freezer..they also don't wet the coats and the pigs love them.... alot of pigs will empty the water out or pee to wet an area and lay in it..and from what Ive seen it is to stay cool...as I said the frozen titles work a treat...... In summer I have around two per piggy and change in the middle of the day..

That sounds like a great tip Fee, do any of your piggies try to nibble at them?. My Jake will nibble on anything. We even once caught our rabbit Thumper trying to nibble on some plaster in are conservatory.

Not the tiles...no nibbles.....But we used to use frozen water bottles and even though they loved them there where a few who chewed on them and would make a rotten mess of the cage with leaking water..LOL the tiles work great ...and I wouldnt change....and being in Australia we get pretty warm over summer.... Cheers fee...
PS I find the tiles easier to keep clean too.a quick wipe with vinegar and water and back in the freezer...done!!

One thing that I have found is that if it is really hot where one lives (of where the pigs are located), the "frozen" tiles just warm up within 20 minutes or so.

Yes some tiles can heat up rather quick but most of ours last over a good hr....We use the large clay backed floor tiles..if wet before freezing they stay cooler than others.... Im a stay at home mum so tend my pigs all through the day durring the hot ones..changing bottles every hour as pigs wont drink warm water....
Honestly if I wasnt at home all day to care for them I wouldnt have them...but thats me...my pigs dont have the luxury of living inside due to my hubby having allergies so they live in a large shed....which is where I spend 99% of my time LOL its cleaner in there than the house..LOL

Good idea! Well it is just today cooling down in the northeast. Isn't a relief Jemima! (looking at you location). On Monday I finally got an A.C. for my bedroom. Sally is loving it. It must have been the heat, she does not do it as much any more.

Yup, it's been amazingly warm, but now that there's this cool spell, I'm fearful S-N-O-W can't be too far off. Gimme the 90's back!

Tiles are a great idea also! When I had a few of my cavies outside I took an extra litter (usually alot larger than my piggy's) pan and filled it about half full with water and froze it in my freezer (if it doesnt fit you can use metal baking pans and place the ice into the pan later) and i put this under their cage to allow the bottom to be cool without them getting to cold or creating a mess with the water melting all over the place. The baking pans also can be used as back ups when the ice begins to melt. I also would wet towels and drape over one end of the cage and allow a fan to blow through it to give them cool air. Dont do this for long periods of time though! Good Luck!

Yep, I am in Alabama and already its Mid-80's. I keep them inside now I have a new yard and it isnt shady enough. I have to let them out in there run late at night and keep an eye on them! Did you know that your bedding can cause your pet to get hot? I know that sounds silly but its true. A lining of newspaper and some Timothy hay works well in the summer months.

You can also use plain bricks inside the cage. They keep cool, the piggies love laying next to it and some owners speculate that it helps trim their nails (like a nail file). You can also use the frozen water bottles. My pigs LOVE when I give them a "piggy popsicle". I take fresh fruits-like oranges, pink grapefruit, cherries or apples, then cut them up into small pieces. I put it in a small clay dish (used just for piggie treats) with water (and sometimes some of the juice from the orange) and freeze. When it's done, I'll break it up into small chunks and give to the piggies- they love it. They loved licking on the ice and REALLY started enjoying it when they realized there was fruit in there too!
