Saturday I've promised the little guy a new cage with extra piggie fun and a friend if he comes back in one piece Not sure he will though, he's had this (best I can describe) patch on his ear for few days, looks an awful lot like the white sticky stuff you get pealing price lables of videos (mostly dry) I've noticed once or twice liquid stuff on it (might have been water) but tonight I noticed dry red spots on edge of the ear He's also itching/scatching/shaking self more possible biting (can't tell) and haven't had him that long enough to know what's right/wrong for him.....still trying to work out what half his squeaks/coos etc are for kp

Hi kp, Please keep us updated on Jack and his visit to the vet. Hopefully this will be easily remedied and Jack will be back and ready for his veggies. Hugs for little Jack

Hi kp.... Im waiting for the test results from my piggy's first real visit to the vets.... we found a lump in her on Saturday last week - took her to the vets on Monday and they took two biopsies. I really hope that it is not cancer and just a fatty lump. She has been so brave. Hopefully I should get the results today, if not I have to call the vets to chase them up. I feel so nervous and sick and am trying not to let her see my feelings. Her sister knows that something is wrong too. I really hope I dont have to go through an operation with her this year. My husband had an operation in February (he has crohns) and that was bad enough.... let alone my little baby girl. She's only just 18 months old. So Honey and Taz are sending loads of love to to Jack. x

Hello Anna and all the best to you too. We've had many a member with the fatty lumps who can share their experiences with you. We are a friendly bunch that like to share and listen. Would you like to start a thread about your little one? That might bring you the most replies and suggestions. Best Wishes!

kp is Jack back from the vets now? His ear problem could be a fungal problem or ear mites.
Whereabouts is he itching and biting. ?Guinea pigs do groom themselves but if its exsessive biting and scratching, he may have mites or lice.
Hope Jack will be alright, I've not seen a photo of him, but already I'm fond of him.

I know (why I promised a friend if he comes back in one piece) will get gran to let him/her move in till Jack's sorted and I'll babysit both
my hospital visit resulted in 3 possible (very likely ops) also had a friend die, and me lousy at hacking holiday time without getting depressed so very protective of Jack
I don't think he's biting/itching that much mostky seems to do it in house (cleaning)) front paws/butt....but since he's my first pig got know idea what's excessive.
Only obvious sign somethings up is he's ear (won't let me check other end without a battle lol) and I really don't want to drop him....eveyone else thinks I'm a hypocondreact
Everything to me seems fine loves veg (cabbage) eating pellets lots of hay, he's drinking fine his eyes look good, fur seems ok, take the roof off his igloo and boy he so squeaks happy running round and round only stopping if I waft food in his direction.
Was getting shanpoo and that this weekend for his first bath just getting dr to look him over on saturday (not open everyday) gives me piece of mind not found anything on his fur though that I can see
As for his friend (does me good as well) somehow I don't think my mam would be keen on a girl even if Jack had that op so likely will have another boy
Since Jack was named after on of they most coolest character on tv (anyone watch stargate?)
Come to equal conculsion that his mate has to have a name equally cool and inportant to my life etc....anyone for naming pets after there tutor? lol

Sorry I'm a bit confused kp, so has he been to the vets yet? If you want to talk about anything other than health, best to leave that in the guinea pig chat area.

I hope it goes well... hopefully it's just ear mites or something and they can treat him easily.

wish I never redecorated cage can now see how much he's iitching/biting etc anyone got advice (me feeling guilty) how to make him feel better e.g. bath if so what type of shampoo to use mite shapoo? or would human shampoo be ok?

I don't think a bath is neccessary. Hasn't the injection helped him to stop itching at all? I would call the vet and ask about it.
If you do bathe him, use tearless baby shampoo - regular shampoo is full of chemicals that aren't any good for them - and not more than once every month or even two so his skin doesn't get dried out and itch even more.

Actually only really noticed how much he's itching since I took igloo out now I can see what he's doing (sleeps in tube/under log)

Okay. If it's not any better in a day or two I'd call the vet to find out what's going on... maybe they can give you something else to stop the itching. I'm afraid I don't have much experience with mites... you might talk to Izzy though, I believe she's had a few pigs who have had them.

Do realise that if you get Jack's friend from the same pet store you got Jack that there is a distict possibility that the new pig will also have mites. Perhaps you should look for a rescue if you can find one in your area as those pigs tend to be of better health than pet-store-pigs.
