My long hair, Nutty, has black/dark crusty stuff in and around the immediate edge of her nostrils. I've not seen it before although she did have pneumonia when i got her, it did not affect her nose as much as it affected her chest.
She's not been sneezing, she's eating normally and moving around happily enough. Her breathing isnt wheezy, but i am concerned about my little pigger. Could something be wrong? Should i take her to the vets to check it out? Can pigs have nose bleeds because it looks a little like dried blood. She hasnt been bitten or scratches by my other pig, her 'housemate' Pappy as i have checked her thoroughly.
Is it something i should be worried about? Or am i just being an overconcerned piggy mum?

Personally I'm not aware of anything specific that would cause a crustiness that looks like dried blood. However a normal nasal area should be clear so this crustiness would suggest something is wrong. I would take her to a vet to have her lungs sounded. Also is it possible that she could have injured the inner nasal passages which is causing bleeding? What do you bed her on?

If she is not showing signs of a URI (with which you are already familiar) I would suggest cleaning her nose and waiting to see if anything returns. If it does (and I'm sure you know this already) you must get her to the vets asap as an untreated URI can be deadly very quickly.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Aww...Poor pigger!! I would do like they say, clean her nose and if it comes back...take her to vet! How long has she had this?

I'd take her to the vet if you can. It could be an infection, or an abscess that has ruptured. Without examining the pig ourselves it's hard to say, but I'd definitely book her in to the vet as soon as you can.

I wiped it off as best i could, but i didnt want her to get water up her nose. It seemed to clear up quite well on its own. But now its back and she also has flakey, pink skin which seems to be rather sensitive. A trip to the vets is in order i think. At least she's still eating and moving normally, and her cage mate doesnt have it so it doesnt seem to be contagious.
I bed them on a combination of newspaper, towels and wood shavings. They have never had any trouble or allergies to the shavings as they are large flakes with very minimal dust, used in horse stables. The shavings i use have been kept in a damp free barn for just over 2 years so the smell of wood is all but gone.
Although recently i have had to use a small flaked 'pet bedding known as 'woodchip'. I dont like this bedding as it had small chunks of wood and cant be comfortable to lie on. Maybe this has caused the skin irritation in my pig. I will remove the wood chip and bed them on newspaper, towels and hay alone for a while and see if that helps as i have read that shavings can cause an allergic reaction in some guinea pigs.
