I am not a smoker, but my boyfriend is. I am thinking about moving in with him and of course bring my piggies. Can cigarette or cigar smoke affect my pigs health? If so, how?

I am sure second hand smoke is just as bad for them as it is for humans. My wife smokes but I make sure its long wait between cigarettes. They are not in the same room she smokes in. Also have a ceiling fan moving the air to break up the smoke.

I'd say that there can be a chance it could increase the risk of respiratory infections as it would with children/humans in a smoking environment. Having said that though, if they're not in the same room or live outside then it should be fine.
I know someone who smokes 20 - 30 a day and her pigs have always had the same life expectancy as people who don't. In fact, she had one that lived to 9 years old that lived for several years inside (where they smoked).

Yes, a recent survey in Liverpool has shown that a third of the admissions to the children's hospital (Alder Hey) could be avoided if the parents didn't smoke in front of their children. I would imagine that it would be the same or worse for piggies as they are so susceptible to URIs.

There is a European campaign to not smoke indoors for the sake of children, as it increases many illnesses in later life. If you consider the size of piggies lungs compared to children, I guess it's even harder for them.
Also consider that smoke is fire to them. Their animal instinct tells them they should escape, which they can't. That must be very stressful!

Thanks. Now, I'm scared to move in with him, lol. I find it funny that I'm more worried about my piggie's health than my own.

And I'm with the others, what is bad for me, is bad for my animals! I lived with a heavy smoker for a few years... and I had pets at that time. I'm not sure if this is the reason of some of her death but it surely didn't help. I had a rat die from a heart disease (went to the vet when she was still alive and got an x-ray, and her heart was bad, she died that same day) maybe heart attack... And depending on how heavy a smoker he is... My roomate was a heavy smoker (one pack of 25 cigs per day) and me every morning when I got up, I was caughing my lungs out... But when I moved out, I was all good.... So imagine what it did to my little ratties

My boyfriend and I both smoke. The piggies are in our "smoke free" zone room, meaning we don't smoke in their room.
They have never had any health issues in the 2+ years we've had them. Having said that, I'm sure it's not good for them as second hand smoke isn't good for anyone or anything. But I wouldn't not move in with your boyfriend because of it if you two are ready for that step. Maybe there can be a compromise, ie he doesn't smoke in their room at the very least, or maybe he'll start smoking outside, better for you and your piggers and your apartment really.
I would discuss with him the implications and see what he's open too. They could be very affected by it seeing as up until now they haven't been around it, or it might not bother them physically at all, it's russian roulette really, ultimately you just have to make your decision based on what's best for you and your animals.
