Here's a bizarre one I just took recently- a sunrise through a VERY cloudy sky!

Cool, and not what sailors or shepherds want to see. Red sky at morning, sailors/shepherds take warning Going to be hot with a capital H, and very unsettled.

I still have a few more sky pics, but they're not as impressive as this one, which is the creme de la creme of my collection: This was taken in 2014, and is a sunrise over Niagara Falls, as seen from the Canadian side! The best part about this one is that I didn't use any filters or camera tricks; what you see is exactly how it appeared to my eyes that morning!

Wow, amazing colours, it looks very dramatic.
So it's all downhill from now is it?!

The Canadian side is the better side. The US side isn't very impressive.

So it's all downhill from now is it?! LOL, mostly! Well, here's another one that's pretty nifty: Sunrise2 by KidHuevos, on Flickr (Apart from using a telephoto lens, no other tricks were used- this is another Chicago sunrise, close to some train tracks.)

That is beautiful, the sun looks so close. I wish he would show his face around here, our British summer is abysmal LOL!!

Yes, our sun never emits that much of a warm glow, does it, Jo?! (Actually we have had some nice stretches of warm sun, in between the torrential downpours!)
What sort of tricks/ effects do you use on some of your photos? I've got quite a nice camera (DSLR) but have failed to acquaint myself with all it's capable of. Can you run a little photography course?! Just don't set any assignments that need sun...!

I don't do much "trickery", so to speak, apart from composing a shot and maybe an occasional cropping, but I can start a separate thread later showing some technique of mine.

I was thinking more of filters and exposure, although I'm not even sure what I even mean by that?!

I was thinking more of filters and exposure, although I'm not even sure what I even mean by that?! If you wanted to fake it, you couldn't have used more convincing words! Filters are simply special add-ons for your lenses that increase or reduce color or light- for example, you can increase the color blue in a sky shot if you have the proper filter. Or, you can use a filter to make a shot "softer", if you're taking a picture of a woman and you'd like to reduce any blemishes on her skin. (Of course, nowadays you can use a photo-editing program to do much of these things, but professionals like to do them "in-camera".) Exposure is simply the amount of light you allow into the aperture of the camera. A daylight shot doesn't need much exposure, unless your subject is in motion. A night shot of a city skyline requires lots of exposure! By the way, I'm not a professional, just a serious hobbyist.

Ah that all makes better sense to me now, thanks. Fella bought me a book on photography which looks really good - very easy to understand. But I've not got round to looking at it yet. He bought me the camera too and an extra macro lens, so probably thinks I'm a total ninny for just using it to point and push! I do like the sports mode on it though!

Nice! I actually took a photo of a sunset the other night - will post it here when I've got it off my phone (if it's any good, it looked great in the flesh!).

Beautiful! We got some pictures of the super moon, last night, as it was coming up through the trees. Hubby used our 35mm Pentax with the telephoto lens. Too bad we have to use the rest of the roll of film before we get it developed! The only problem with 35mm! Hopefully, we'll get some good pictures

Okay, here's my sunset effort - it was the view over the lake from our villa in Sherwood Forest. I tried to find a place there was less branch obstruction, but there were trees everywhere!
