I was just wondering whether or not to buy a new pig at a pet store or should I find a breeder.

Have you got any rescues or shelters near you? I think they're the best places to look first as there are so any unwanted guinea pigs in the world that I think it's best to look after them first. You can get guinea pigs of all ages and types, and they'll usually help you find the right pigs for you. Here's a good place to start looking (especially if you're in the US) www.cavyrescue.com/ and if you're in the UK I've made a list of the guinea pig rescues I've found www.treenspigs.com/info/ukrescuelist.html.

No Treen, I checked the web site and there are no pig rescues near me. There is a shelter close but I do not know if they house guinea pigs.

Cavy13, By all means call the shelter and ask if they have any pigs. Also ask some veterinarians in your area as they often know who wants to get rid of an animal. When I got my pigs I tried all that and there weren't any available so I did buy them from a pet store. Although I feel that they shouldn't be selling ANYTHING but supplies, I felt like I was "rescuing" my girls from their clutches just the same. Also, get two, as piggies are herd animals that like company! Good luck and welcome to this great site! I am new too and am loving all the advice and new friends!

I bought Chessy at a pet store. And she has never gotten 'sick'. She has broken a tooth though (by accident) And the vet has cut her nails too short... so she started bleeding... but she is healthy, other then those accidents which have happened. So I am guessing it depends on the pet store you buy the pigs at

Hope the guinea pig will be okay If you ever see a pet store called "Mauches pet super store" Don't buy ANYTHING.... That place scares me... they keep their DOGS in RODENT cages... And their weird mutated pugs were 1000s of dollars...

Oh thats awful , can they not be reported for animal cruelty?
I've seen so many bad pet stores, I think good pet stores are in the minority . I just think buying any animals from pet stores just encourages bad pet stores to keep their animals in bad conditions. I'd much rather get a piggy from a rescue centre, theres just so many out there needing loving homes.

Hi Maggie, welcome to Wheekers One pet store I went in, didn't have any water available for the piggies, plus mixed sex's in the cage and artificial plants that the piggies could reach Anyway it was clear he wasn't going to listen to my concerns so I reported him. Since then I don't even buy my supplies from pet shops that sell animals, as even buying anything from them is encouraging these awful stores to stay open.
