I am thinking about getting two guinea pigs. One a girl and one a boy. I have room avalible for two cavy cube cages. Each is 29 inches by 29 inches (2.4 feet*2.4feet or 76.8 cm by 76.8 cm.) is that a big enough cage. They will not be together for mating reasons yet. I also thought since i might get a gal and lad why not mate them. My friend's guinea pigs have babies and i know how the process goes. So, does anyone think i shouldn't mate them. I am not going to be a gp parent who gives away babies i might give one away to my best friend but i will keep the rest.

For 2 pigs, 30" by 50" is recommended. "I also thought since i might get a gal and lad why not mate them." Breeding guinea pigs is not recommended and not to be taken lightely. Why do you want to breed your pigs? "hey since im getting a lad and a gal why not mate them?" This is not the attitude to have! Breeding is very risky and holds many complications! Just because your friends had babies does not mean you know the process. Pet lovers and breeding simply don't mix. It sounds like you are breeding for all the wrong reasons and what you said made me upset. Please visit here www.guinealynx.info/breeding.html#breeding

Please don't breed them. There are so many piggies who already need homes that if you MUST have more save some unwanted ones. I know it's tempting to have cute little babies but please don't do it. Rescue-don't breed! And the cage IS too small for two pigs.

And if the cage is already too small for two pigs, where do you plant to keep the litter of possible 6 pups? If their are complications, it will be very very costly to get her help from the vet. Please don't breed and risk the life of your precious pig!

I have the same opinions as Kitty and Vegan. There can be complications, during a pregnancy, birth or after birth. You also have to think of the extra cost, extra cages, vetrinary bills etc.
We are actually a rescue friendly forum so talking about breeding guinea pigs is discouraged.

Oh please don't breed. I have seen a piggy born very ill & died aged jjust 4 weeks because he was bred by someone who didn't know what they were doing. I al;so know of a piggy that was born dead with 2 heads and countless sows that have died due to complications in birth made worse by an inexperaince human caring for them. Babies are cute but there are enought unwanted piggys in the world without bringing in more babies to take homes that could have gone to older piggys who needed them. They are not toys and breeding is not a hobby. search your heart and you will know that its not the right thing to do. In the mean time please check out this link... www.cavyspirit.com/breeding.htm

Hm..well my Charm boy is a copper color and if he was a girl, Scarlett would have been pretty. I like names like Adrianne, Amber, Abigial, Ariel, Autumn. ;D Have you been to the guinea pig names on here? jackiesguineapiggies.com/guineapignames.html

You weren't being stupid, just human! We all like darling little babies of all sorts and it's soooo tempting to want lots of 'em. We're all here to learn how to take better care of our piggies. This week I learned something too thanks to WHEEKERS. But if you truly felt stupid, we are doing something wrong here. I had hoped we all learned to talk to each other a little more respectfully... Can't wait to hear all about your new girl!

Aww please don't think that Amanda. We are all learning about guinea pigs, its neverending, but its one of my favourite pastimes. I can read for ages about piggies.
I know we all have different views and as long as we don't force our views on other people and in a disrespectful way, like Kitty has mentioned, we can show people the other side of the coin about breeding and hope they take things on board. Helping to make people aware that breeding isn't plain sailing and is something that shouldn't be taken on lightly. Then at least if they know the risks, its up to them to decide.

Good on your Amanda! I think you made the right decision... and no need to apologise... as Kitty says its tempting and we all have moments of madness and each and every one of us things still to learn. good luck with your girly. What guinea pigs do you have now? Just checking you don;t have a pair of boys because the smell of the girlie would make them fight. and also you don;t want any 'accidents'. Are you going to get her from a rescue? That would be lovely! Look forward to hearing about her Susie

Aw, that would be a shame she couldnt play with them! You should get a boy so they can all enjoy each others company! That would be soo much better! ;D And also, you would have to keep her far away from them so they cant smell the scent of a sow near..
