Glad to hear it. The only critters I see downstairs are spiders, and I like to leave them alone to take care of the bugs who really don't deserve to be in my house.

The pigs are now lice-free! And Biscuit turned 6 earlier in the year (or maybe more, but we know she's at least that old). She's full of the joys of spring - I think being part of a pair (and with the chilled out Reg rather than the rambunctious Tissue!) suits her perfectly. (Fuzzy phone picture alert, but it's that or nothing!)

Fuzzy phone picture appreciated. Gorgeous piggy, and still hopefully a youngster

Sadly Reggie has died. She's seemed older in the last few months, and it became clear she was winding down a few days ago. This is a typical Reg pose - at the tiniest hint that there was someone around who might give her something, she'd stand up as tall as she could at the side and pop her head eagerly over the top! She'd recently taking to standing on top of the food bowl to stand up, like the small boost in height might mean more food! So this just leaves us with Biscuit. I don't like to have solo pigs, but we don't really want to get any more at this point. And although Biscuit appears like a 2 year old, she's nearly 7. We'll see how she gets on.

Popcorn free, Reggie <3
No, I didn't see this post at all, sorry.

Bean, I'm sorry I missed this post. My condolences for your loss.
I'd like another pig to keep Zeke company as well, but I don't know what my situation will be later this year, so I'm down to a solo cavy as well. Zeke doesn't seem to mind; he keeps to himself most of the time, even when Stilgar was around.
Occasionally he pops his head out of his pigloo and lets me pet him, but for the most part he's a loner.

Sometimes they bloom with a cage mate. Other times they don't. You'd have to try him in a meet and greet, and see how he reacts to another pig. If he's young, it may be worth getting another pig.

Right now it's a little less stressful to take care of just one guy. I should schedule a vet appointment, but I'm worried that I'll end up in another monthly situation where I'm spending loads of money on meds. Zeke seems to be fine, but he should see the vet just for a checkup. I'm going to see a dentist to get myself in order first, then I'll get going on Zeke.
Speaking of Zeke, my wife is out of town for a week so I moved him upstairs in the living room where he can see the big picture window. It's just trees from his view, but I want him to get some natural sunshine instead of that lamp I have on his cage every day.

I've never taken mine for check ups - Biscuit's never been to the vet. But I appreciate it could be reassuring. I hope Zeke enjoys his holiday upstairs - and that you enjoy having a week of peace too.
Do you think we could set up some kind of webcam Zeke and Biscuit could use independently, so they can have a quick chat whenever they feel like company?! We're making more effort to interact with Biscuit since she's been on her own and she seems okay, but when we went away for a few days, she was definitely quieter when we got back. Our pigsitter offered her extra attention, but she's not so interested in people she doesn't know.

Ooh, that's a great idea. Both pigs have no one to share things with, and a web cam with sound is a great way to get each of them a pal. We had it two houses ago, but not since then. Web cams are much better now!

Biscuit having made a little hay nest is now eating her way out of it - she's making good progress here!

She's definitely not quite as active without a pal (she was often found following Reggie round with a happy rumble) but she's in pretty good spirits. I don't think she's clocked that whatever food is in the cage is hers and hers alone, no competition - she still eats like it could be snatched away at any point!

I guess it takes a while for them to adjust. She was used to have a cage mate, and may still think another cage mate is coming. After a while, she'll realize that's not going to happen and she'll adjust.

Another observation is about Biscuit's hearing. We were pretty sure she'd gone pretty deaf as she hardly responded to our voices and other noises like plastic rustling in the way she used to - she'd react more to the others getting excited, or seeing movement/ smelling food. Once she clocked something was going on, she responded the same as ever.
But now it's just her, she's much more responsive to sound. I guess the motivation not to miss out on food (and possibly interaction, but I think we know her main motivation!) is driving her to attune to us! Or maybe having less noise from other pigs means she's more likely to hear us. Whatever it is, it's quite a change!

I remember Morty being the eyes and ears for Molly. He helped her up and down the ramps, stayed with her unless she was with me. They do count on their cage mates, that's for sure. If you think Biscuit is deaf, you could try some things to tell her it's food or treat time, such is flicking the lights on and off, or something like that. I'm curious if it works?

Well, that's the thing - she was unresponsive to sound before leading us to assume she was going deaf, but now she seems okay. She's responding to voices and bags crinkling etc. Now it seems like her hearing is fine!

That's wonderful. I see why you thought she was deaf, and not think maybe she just didn't need to pay attention before
