I also think there are animal people, who truly love animals and want to give them great lives, and there are people who have animals. Animals seem to know who's who.

I agree, Irina. It's so sad that vets put earning money ahead of animal welfare, but they do. I used to have a guinea pig vet who was outrageously expensive, as much as 5 times more than any other vets. Yes, he knew a lot about guinea pigs, but I just couldn't afford him. It took me a while to find another decent vet, definitely not as knowledgeable, but willing to learn and ask questions. After spending about $10K on my pigs over a couple of years, I couldn't afford to contribute to his portfolio any longer!!

How much is that in euro,?here except that they don't have the experience that I thing they should have on guinea pigs(reading through this forum made me realise that every country is the same, not many vets know about piggies),don't charge that much, about 1 euro if they give medicine. For a check up or consultation don't charge at all. I mean I'm not rich as hell, but they are my baby's and I will do anything if they need something.I feel pretty lucky because I don't have a big paycheck but my mom is here ,willing to pay anything because they are family.

87,059 eu, and for one year of health care for three pigs, that's outrageous! Yes, he was the best, most knowledgeable guinea pig vet, but outrageously expensive. I felt the same way, I'd do anything for my babies, and he took advantage of that. Vets can be extremely expensive in the US. No limits on their charges anymore than there are limits on what people doctors charge, or what the medications can cost. Wealthiest country in the world, and over 50% of the people can't afford the meds they need to stay alive

I think $10,000 is closer to 8,500-9,000 EURO. Still a lot but not quite so shocking!
It is so hard when you don't have much spare cash and your pet ends up having something like dental problems. My most expensive pig cost me hundreds rather than thousands, but it was at a time when we really didn't have any spare cash. Of course you do what you need to do - you've taken responsibility for giving them the care they need, whatever that is.
But if you have a vet who's extortionate or who advises treatments that are expensive but not likely to improve quality of life or life expectancy, you start to weigh things up more critically. Sometimes it can be a tough line to draw - when you keep fighting for them and when you make sure they're comfortable but choose not put them through any more or even decide enough is enough for them. It's a time when a crystal ball would be especially useful!

Bloody hell Piggles love, I bet that vet didn't miss many meals!! That is disgraceful. Cash is always an issue with us but when we have had problems in the past our vet has let us spread the cost, we have been very lucky.

Yep, no arguments there! Even if he was the best, to charge so far beyond the value of what he's providing to someone in a vulnerable position (having a sick pet really stops you from being able to evaluate the worth of something) is wrong.

Nothing is subsidized in the US. Vets have to pay for vet school, setting up their practice, etc., and they can charge anything they want to charge, to get the money. Costs also vary greatly between rural and city vets, as the cost of doing business is so much less in rural areas. Just not many guinea pigs in New Hampshire, so not many vets who really know about them. I think that vet realized he had a guinea pig lover in me, and really ripped me off on all the tests he HAD to run, etc. After Grishy died while being boarded at his facility, and 3 years later he had decided to take a day off when Zippy died, that was too much. Thousands of dollars spent for that vet to keep my Zippy healthy, and he decided to take the day off. No cavy savvy vet fill in, just take him to another vet

Same here the doctors for people are very arrogant, some vets to. It is really rarery to find a doctor and vet that loves people or animals and realy wants to help. Yes they have problems and money is an issue, like all of us,but wasn't the point to help even if people don't have mony ,or lower the price.
Sorry for your Zippy what an asshole.
A Month ago piggies had lice, when to the vet along with my mum and she suggested neopitroid just sprinkle it on his hair
.Wtf was my reaction,is that poisonos?she aswered-He wouldn't be able to reach it,would he ?...My mum then stared saying medical stuff bla bla, that is dangerous, that is for plants only bla bla. She then yes you are right, maybe advantage, bingo that was the answer.
Here uri is treated with cefalexin(which is rated as dangerous for piggies)with my own two eyes I saw the book where that was writen, veterinary faculty Belgrade.Piggies that were treated were fine and are alive.
Sorry for the huge post,I just get so angry when people are rude.

Rant on! We totally understand. It's bad enough when we don't know how to treat our pets, and maybe do the wrong thing, but for what doctors cost, they should know what they're doing. It's sad that they only treat the pets that earn them a lot of money, and guinea pigs don't fit that category.

That's probably the case where you are, but I was telling myself that, if I just did everything the doctor told me to, I was doing everything possible for my pigs. Then it turned out that all the well-pig visits and ear cleanings didn't do anything except run me out of money, so when my pig really got sick, I was broke. It was a hard lesson to learn, but sometimes there isn't anything we can do, but they'll charge us for doing something, anyway. I have a very good vet, now. Not terribly knowledgeable, but willing to learn, and very fairly priced!
