Great news! I crushed a Baytril tablet and mixed it with some V8 vegetable juice, and Morty sucked it down with gusto! Seems the liquid was meant for injecting, so taste didn't matter. The tablets are meant for drinking, so they must taste a whole lot better. I wish I'd had the tablets before, when I had to force liquid Baytril down some very stubborn piggies.
Also, I had been using a Q tip to apply the Silver Sulfadizine on Morty's foot, and now on his tumor. The tumor scabby points catch the cotton, and pull it off. So today I tried a make up sponge, available in any make up aisle, and it did a much better job on the tumor. He's still fighting being restrained long enough for me to apply the salve, so by the time I got to his foot, I was glad to have a much wider, flatter and sturdy applicator. I totally recommend using the make up sponge to apply salve.
He seems a bit more spry today, than he has for a while, so maybe his foot is feeling a bit better.

Day 3 with no blood from the tumor, so I think the Silver Sulfadizine is working. I'm not sure what it's doing, but whatever it is, I like it. Morty looks likes a grease ball, but at least his tumor is staying covered with the salve, and not bleeding. The girls got under the fleece today, when I had the houses out for condo cleaning. They were adorable bumps moving around under the fleece pad. The only problem was that Morty couldn't see the difference between the bumps and the flat spots, and kept running into them. Noodles came out without too much fuss, but Oodles had no intention of coming out, and made me chase her up and down the cage under the fleece (she was under the fleece, I wasn't ) I did finally get her out, and she was all sulky, until she got some veggies. Amazing how that works Because of the bleeding, I've gone through a lot of bedding. I had been piling it in the carrier to take up to the laundry room, and finally did that today. The fleece pads with the pink, terry cloth backing haven't come clean after over 3 hours of washing. The stains seem to have set into the pink terry cloth. I'm trying color safe bleach, to see if that will help get the stains out of the terry cloth. The stains are dark enough to appear to be blood or urine, when they aren't, so I'm at least trying to lighten the stains.

I'm glad the baytril is going down nicely with the V8 - you must be very relieved there was no fight at all!
Great news that the tumour hasn't been bleeding either. Hope that continues and that you can get the stains out of the bedding.
I can imagine the girls under the fleece - bet they'll be tugging at the edges looking for a way in now they know it's there!

The girls have figured out that, once I remove the houses, they can get under the fleece. They were back under there again today, and I expect that will become a regular thing The vet called for a follow up on how Morty was doing with the Baytril. She's going to give him a 30 day refill. I'll get that tomorrow. I never tried V8 vegetable juice with them before. Glad that was all we had for juice at the time

Sad start to the day, as Morty seems as interested in food as ever, but is unable to move very well. Earlier, his hind legs seemed to be giving him problems. Now his front legs aren't working very well. I have him in the floor cage, on a fleece pad, with a pile of hay, a bowl of pellets and a lot of cucumber pieces for liquid. The girls kept stealing his cucumber pieces, and he needs his liquid, so he now has a place of his own, and I can watch him easily. I don't think he has much time left, and I want to make what he has, as pleasant as possible. I'm not ready to have him put to sleep, as long as he is enjoying his food, and he wants it. He refused the Baytril this morning, but he took the Metacam, so at least he has something. I may try the Baytril in the V8 juice again, just giving him a lot less V8 juice than he was getting when he got diarrhea. So I'm on Morty watch. I don't want him to suffer, and I do want him to be back with his girls when he goes, if he goes naturally.

Morty made it through the night. His extremities are really swollen, but he's attentive and liking attention, enjoying his girls, and eating hay. He's a lot slower than he was yesterday. I put him back in with the girls, because all the veggies he ate for liquid gave him diarrhea. I put him on a soft fleece pad in the hay, with a low rimmed bowl of water. I don't think he drank any, but I will put it back in tonight, just in case. I'm giving him a syringe or more of water every half hour, and he seems fine with that. I talked to the vet this morning, and based on my description, she thought he should be put out of his misery. Luckily, we're having a sleet and freezing rain storm, and it's only 23 degrees outside, so we're not taking him anywhere. I really hope he'll go quietly, in his sleep, and his girls can say their goodbyes. He's been a wonderful addition to my family If he's still with me tomorrow, I'll have to consider putting him to sleep. I'm not looking forward to that, but he is having more and more trouble moving at all. I gave Morty more water, a few minutes ago, and noticed his breathing has gotten raspy. I wish I had the pictures uploaded so I could post them, but I filled an empty plastic water bottle with hot water, put it in a mitten, and he's lying next to it staying warm. I know there are a lot of products out there, Snuggle Safe, etc., to keep animals warm when it cold or they're sick, but I don't have any. He seems to really be enjoying the warm glove, so I will check that again in a half hour or so, and add more hot water to it. Homemade hot water bottle, or mitten, in this case

Awww... I've been following your updates on Facebook. I really hope he can pass away in his sleep too. It just seems like he doesn't have much time left and I don't want you to have to take him to the vet and stuff. It's too hard. Being at home with his family is better. I'll be thinking of you until the next update xx

Aww it sounds very upsetting to see dear Morty like that. I hope nature takes its course to relieve him soon. I totally understand that you would prefer for him to pass at home with his ladies. I'm just concerned that if you're syringe feeding him water and keeping him warm because he's too sick to move, it could well be prolonging the natural process for him? Did your vet have any advice on getting the balance right on that front? I hope he's still taking his painkillers okay so you know he's getting relief from his symptoms.
It doesn't sound as if he has long left, but I hope if he's still with you today, that the weather is looking kinder so you can get to the vets.

Not only is Morty still with me, he's been drinking water from the syringe, eating hay and fighting off the girls for trying to steal his veggies. He still can't move his hind end, and I think he wants to be with the girls, and gets frustrated when he can't follow them out of the kitchen area.
I didn't clean the cage yesterday, because I really thought it was going to be his last day, and I didn't want to disturb him. He needs his undercarriage washed, and a soak might help with his back end paralysis. If nothing else, we'll get some good snuggle time in. I'll give the cage a thorough cleaning, and change his fleece pad. I think he'd like some time in another part of the cage, too, so he can have a change of scenery. I'm just so glad he's still with me, and while I know he may not be all that happy, he's fighting to stay with us, to get his veggie treats, etc., and always glad when we stop to pet and talk to him. I just can't end him when he's fighting as hard as he is. The holiday season makes it really hard to know what to do, as again this weekend, the vet will be closed Friday through Sunday, and if he needs to be helped along, we won't be able to. I think they're only open until noon tomorrow, too. I really hope I don't regret not helping him along.

Aw I hope his interest in food means he's feeling a lot better in himself. He certainly has a lot to contend with at the moment. How's his tumour looking?
Would it be worth talking to the vet this morning to find out what your options are if he takes a downward turn while the vets are closed? She might be able to give you more painkillers or advise you on doses of metacam, so you can help reduce any discomfort for him as much as possible. It's probably just a good idea to check in with them anyway, as they may have some more ideas of how to help him if you're not taking the route they've previously advised.
Will be thinking of Morty - sending him lots of love. xx
