I knew about the fishing. The EU has had problems with their fishing quotas for ocean and freshwater fish. I remember reading about a huge lake the some EU and non-EU countries bordered. The EU countries had fishing limits, while the non-EU countries took all they wanted. That meant the EU countries couldn't compete with the non-EU countries, and were losing their livelihoods. It's basically the same with British fishing. If British fishermen can take all they want, the EU fishermen won't be able to match the amount/income, because of their fishing quotas.
It's an unfortunate situation, and on a much larger scale between EU and non-EU countries, than it is between the different US states. We've had to have environmental laws to stop one state from spewing toxic waste into the air and water, that eventually ends up polluting other states who can't stop the wind, rain or river flow. Usually, the differences are minor, such as the level of requirements to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon, to drive a vehicle, to work at a school, etc.
It's legal to carry an unconcealed weapon without a permit, in NH. It's totally illegal to even own a weapon without a permit, in Massachusetts. It's difficult enough to qualify for a drivers license in Massachusetts, that a Massachusetts license can be transferred to any other state. People moving to Massachusetts from out of state have to take a drivers test to get a license. In states like Mississippi and Louisiana, residents used to be able to just send away for a drivers license without ever taking a driving or written test. Some of those things are very important to the states to be able to make those decisions on their own.

It's legal to carry an unconcealed weapon without a permit, in NH. Crumbs! I'd not be comfortable with that at all. In states like Mississippi and Louisiana, residents used to be able to just send away for a drivers license without ever taking a driving or written test. Or that! Reassuringly, it sounds like that's no longer the case. You think most people would want some minimum and agreed standards of safety rather than just thinking that because they want something, they should just be able to have it. It'd certainly be common sense with people being able to move between one state and another. People agreeing though, that's always a hard one!

A common mentality here in the US.

It seems to be THE common mentality in the US My first. Only what I want matters The worst part is that there are good people who do a lot for others, yet the Me First-ers will verbally rip apart those people, just because those people are getting accolades for doing things for other, something them Me First-ers can't even imagine.

Yes, it is going to be here in no time! I have GOT to get busy and get my dad's package mailed tomorrow at the latest. He is a widower who lives alone quite some distance from us, and I want to make sure he gets this in time. I love putting together little "care packages" for him; he's so easy to please and likes everything, so I just fill up a box with all sort of little treats and things. This year, I stuck in a pair of fluffy warm socks; a cute calendar for 2021; his favorite coffee; chocolates; jelly beans (his favorite); a book; and of course a nice card. Hope he likes it.

That sounds like a wonderful care package, and great for Christmas. I'm sure he'll love it, especially since it's from you I'm overdosing on the election and COVID news. Even those it's going from mostly bad news to mostly good news, it's all there is for news. It's definitely time to talk about Christmas I've been planning my Christmas baking, so I get it all done on time, but not too soon. I want everything to be fresh. We have our beef roast for Christmas dinner, and just have to get hubby's input on side dishes. Only one day of swimming next week, as Christmas is on our Friday swim day, and I need the other days to get all the baking done. We were lucky at Thanksgiving, that the holiday fell on a Thursday, so didn't interfere with our Tuesday or Friday swim days We're going to get a bag of peanuts for the birds and little furries, so they have something to feast on for Christmas, too. We'll get the shelled peanuts, so we don't have a back yard full of peanut hulls. Bitterly cold here today, and for the next couple of days. Leaving the faucets dripping overnight. It was 10F when I went out to feed the birds and furries, this morning. We may get a foot or more of snow overnight tonight into tomorrow. It's going to be light, powdery snow, so the biggest problem is the snow blowing across the roads causing whiteouts. Otherwise, we'll probably be able to sweep the snow off the porches and steps. We used to get such good snowman snow, but it's been a long time since we got any. Of course, as soon as I promised to build a snowman for a friends son, we stopped getting snowman snow!

Another pro tip for those who had no heat was that we had them turn their oven on and open the door, to let it act as a makeshift fireplace. Ah, the things you learn doing residential maintenance...

Our pool is shutting far less over Christmas than it usually does so we should still be able to get a couple of swims in each week, even if they end up being on slightly different days. Maybe they figure they've had to shut enough they just want to keep going, especially with us not being able to do all the Christmassy things we usually do, but hopefully all the staff are getting the holidays they want too.
School's out tomorrow so we'll be cracking on with our festive baking (and eating) at the weekend - starting with gingerbread, I'm not sure if it'll be houses or just people/ animals this year!
My daughter is really hoping for a white Christmas - please send some snow over for us!

As I said in another post, we have about 20" of snow, and it's still snowing. If I could get some over to you, I definitely would We are going to have a white Christmas, that's for sure Also, since we've been in a severe drought for the last few years, this snow is fabulous. It is filling the rivers, streams and ponds, which fill the aquifers. When all this melts, we should have some decent water tables for at least the start of the summer. Hopefully we'll get more rain this summer, than we've had the last few summers Hubby is doing snow blowing round 2, lol. The snow isn't supposed to stop until around 5 p.m., and after a few hours of relatively slow snow, the volume picked up again. He'll be out for Round 3 later today! I'm having him slow blow some paths to where I feed the ground feeders, as the snow is up to my knees, which means every time I got out to feed or shovel, I have to take off all the wet clothes and run them through the dryer. Our daughter went in to work before dawn this morning. I haven't checked Facebook to see if she posted anything about the trip. She was headed toward the coast, where they got even more snow than we got, so if nothing else, she's going to have a lot of snow to clear off her car when she goes home from work! I'll be baking this weekend, too. If I get enough done in advance, we may swim another day, but I think if we stick to Tuesday, and we're having family over for Christmas Eve on Thursday, that's pushing it trying to get in another day. We'll discuss it, but I think hubby is planning on getting up to reserve us a slot on Tuesday, only.

One swim is still great if that's what you can fit in on a busy week. Save your energy for the gift making and seeing your family and get back to your usual routine the week after.
Sounds very snowy there - pictures please! Hope hub can keep up with the pace!

We got about 32" of fresh snow. I'm posting a photo of the snow on the roof, as it's really funky looking ❄❄❄ Roads are getting clear. The wind stopped sometime overnight, so road crews didn't have to fight the blowing snow covering what they just plowed. The city of Concord didn't even try to clear the parking in front of the Y, but hubby managed to find a parking space on the top level of the parking garage. We got our swimming done, and probably should have gone home instead of food shopping. Not only was the store crowded, but the shoppers quickly pushed my patience too far. Going back to the car, walking with my cane, a woman driving down my aisle almost hit me. Never even slowed down or looked at me. Merry Christmas, bah humbug. Hubby is doing more cleanup outside. Clearing around the mailbox, unplugging the blown snow from the bird feeders, widening paths, etc. All worth it for a white Christmas.

Oh that layered folding snow looks great - really pretty! Glad you managed to get out to your swim and the shops. Things would start grinding to a halt here with 20"+ of snow, we don't get it enough to be slick at coping with it!

The difference two hours don't make, lol 🌡I sent outside to feed th ed birds and critters at -8F. Dressed warmly, so I was fine, but my glasses kept steaming up, lol There are lis of places here that grind to a halt for less than an inch of snow.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr!
Well Christmas has just changed here for lots of people. Yesterday morning we had a three tier system of restrictions and everyone was allowed to mix with two other households over a 5 day period around Christmas.
Then in the afternoon they announced a fourth and stricter tier, and people in tier 4 can't do anything at all for Christmas. And the five day mixing period for the rest of us has been reduced to one day only.
They're doing it because of increased rates of transmission (there's some variant which is spreading more quickly) but right from the start such a significant relaxation of the rules has seemed like a bad idea, yet they've let people make plans to travel etc and get excited, and are now whipping it out from under them at the last minute. It's caused more disruption and upset than just saying 'Hold on a few months!' in the first place.
Anyway, we've avoided making plans, largely for exactly this reason, so it hasn't changed anything for us. I'm just hoping we avoid tier 4 (safe for the moment) as gyms are closed.
I shall do some pressie wrapping later instead of watching the news coverage of this!

I heard about that yesterday. Scary. Here's hoping tier 4 can be avoided.
Coworker told me last week that people around here (fairly small community) are actively trying to achieve herd immunity. Insane. We're averaging close to 100 new cases a day, with a positivity rate of 17%. Didn't even know how to respond to her.
Hoping to get presents wrapped today. I have put everything off to the last minute!
It's just going to be the two of us this year.
Neat picture, 3piggies! Grrrr on that person almost hitting you!

Hehe, thanks Seffy. I'm glad she didn't actually hit me.
That herb mentality is right to a very small extent, and not practical in a pandemic. First, everyone in the town would have to be negative for the virus. Then the town has to close completely, no one leaves, no one enters. That's the only way to make sure the virus doesn't spread, normally. This virus seems to be able to spread in a lot of different ways. The people living on the border of your town and the surrounding towns could get it from outside the town. The wind doesn't know it's crossed town lines. I always wonder about the thought processes of people who take one idea totally out of context, don't think about what's really required, and believe they're doing the best thing? Sigh!
I have friends in some of the Tier 4 places, and while they are not at all happy with the restrictions, they prefer to restrict themselves than get the virus.
We're still not one of the worst places for the virus. I think the fact that so much of NH is rural probably helps, though the post Thanksgiving surge hit the rural areas harder than they'd been hit before. Some towns hadn't had a single case of COVID, and now have several. I wonder if all this snow and rain will help, take airborne things out of the air?
I wish I could send you some holiday cheer, Seffy. I hope you have a great holiday, even under our current conditions!

That herb mentality is right to a very small extent, and not practical in a pandemic. I'm sorry, I know you meant herd not herb, but the idea of herb mentality is giving me a chuckle! I'd be basil! We're pretty much organised here and looking forward to a quiet but hopefully still very enjoyable Christmas at home. We'll have a baking day later in the week to make the puddings etc (we're up to three now - the kids and I are all making one each - my husband's contribution strength lies in eating them!). I haven't even got round to watching Elf yet either - that's a must for me!

Helllooooo.
I am back in Austria...arrived yesterday morning, after quite some mishaps on the way. I was supposed to actually fly over on Saturday evening, but the extreme tiredness that accumulated over two very intense weeks spent in the lab, ruined my plans. I wasn't even able to read the clock properly and i missed my flight...arrived on the airport 20 min before departure, completely oblivious that i was so late. Only a text message from my husband made me realise that i was actually missing my flight. I was lucky though, to find a not overly expensive flight the next day very early in the morning and i was finally back home with only 13h delay compared to the planned arrival.
I finally also finished my lab project, got some sort of results, though i can't draw any conclusions. The results are not really consistent. I am though attaching one of the samples that came out of the experiments. Apparently having thin samples that are flexible and foldable is very desirable. I am thinking to continue with this project as a master thesis and see if i can optimise it and get some better results. If only i would also get a better supervisor... the one that i had now was waaaaaay to busy and this project was somewhere at the bottom of his priority list. Which means, that i was left completely alone to design the experiments and find solutions, about a topic that was completely new for me.

Glad you're home, safe and sound, and can finally get the rest no need It should be interesting to continue it as a masters thesis. Inconsistent results are still results, as all the right answer come from getting all the wrong ones, first, and sorting through what happened. You'll figure it out The item in the video reminded me of a very thick contact lens. I can imagine the thinner and more flexible, the better, but knowing what your goal is, you'll be able to determine what you need to do It's not good to have a supervisor who just doesn't have time for you, especially since your project was no less important to you, than all the others were to them. Will you keep that supervisor, or does the supervisor change by the project? After hours sitting in the car with an injured guinea pig, I needed that laugh, Bean Yes, I meant HERD, but I think I'll stick with HERB, lol
