I know Anna uses this and have sent her a PM to ask about it but wonder if anyone else uses it, what you think of it and how you layer it up? I have had it for my cats in the past when they were sick but was some time ago. I remember it being quite fuzzy and am wondering does hay stick very badly in it or do you just avoid putting hay on it.

I use some vet bed in my cage but only underneath their rabbit-loos just so that where my piggies lay the most, it will stay completely dry. I love vet bed!It is not sold here in America, or not that I have found anyway. It would be my first choice for bedding if I could find it here. Anna and I have talked about her shipping it from the UK to me in the USA.
I had to order mine from Sally at Pampered Piggies. She even took it out of the packaging so my shipping cost would be less to pay.
Anna uses it in her entire cage, which is what I would LOVE to do. The cost would be quite expensive but in the long run it would end up paying for itself with all the money you would be saving from buying other bedding. It is machine washable and has a very deep plush pile, and moisture is wicked away from the top of the pile so your piggie stays nice and dry. It is especially helpful if you have long hair piggies like I do.

Funny you should say that Val as I was thinking of ordering it from Sally. I think a couple of my local pet shops sell it so am going to check the prices there first. It was due to Rodge and Podge having longer hair that I started thinking about and then that post from Donna about the mould in hay made me thinking even more strongly about it.
I would only need it for the bedroom in the girls hutch but would need it for all the areas in the boys hutches/cages. It also depends on how my boys get on when they meet and what sort of accommodation I move them into.
From my experience of when I bought in whilst I was living in England it was easy to get but that might not be the same scenario here!

I believe we all have the same idea due to the hay scare.
If it makes our piggies safer I think we should save up and invest in some. Even if it is in the bedroom areas only, like you say Lesa. I think I would just need a set in my piggies bedrooms, then a spare set to change over etc.
Val & Lesa, , if I can help to get some to you, let me know, I would buy here then post on to you both. Let me know how you get on. x

Val - do you know if you can tumble dry this product? Thanks Donna x Donna,Yes you can, but do not use bleach or fabric softener....very important DO NOT use fabric softener. I remember it being quite fuzzy and am wondering does hay stick very badly in it or do you just avoid putting hay on it. Newpig, Hay will stick to it. It is not a problem for me since I use it only under the rabbit-loos. With Anna's since she has a huge cage and her vet bed covers the entire cage, she also put a sheet on top of the vet bed. That is really ideal, because hay does not stick to the sheet. Vet bed reminds me of the pads that hospitals or nursing homes use underneath bed ridden patients in order to prevent bed sores and moisture build up. I have often wondered if it is the same thing?

FYI guys, I know that Anna knows of a place to buy the vet bed in bulk, That way you can get a super huge piece to cover your entire cage of 1/2 your cage or get an extra piece so you will have two. That way while you are washing one you can still have a clean one to put back into your piggies cage. OH Anna....HELP! Jellybean, here is a link so you can see what Vet Bed is. I have no idea if this is a good place to buy it, but it does illustrate how moisture passes right through it. That way your piggy will stay clean and dry and kissing sweet....oops! wrong end! lol www.bedding.demon.co.uk/ProFleece60x40inchPieces.htm

P.S. Do you ever sleep? ? lol! Not lately it seems! Funny that you asked that, why? Vet bed would be WONDERFUL for any living thing to sleep on. It is extremely plush! Yes it is fine to use washing powders or liquid laundry soaps. Just not fabric softener, as that causes moisture to bead up an remain on top, and we want it to wick through to the bottom.

Poor Adam - he isn't going t recognise the house when he gets home!!
I remember about not using fabric conditioner and I didn't use any special detergents on it but at that time I was using it for the cats.

Do you have to change and wash vetbed more than once a day?
|
|
|
Post by Val Amirault-Vale on Feb 19, 2008 10:13:45 GMT
Oh no, once a week is fine! Just toss it in the washer, after you shake off the beans of course! lol In between washings all you really need to do is a little sweep up of beans, just to tidy up the cage. All urine passes right through to the back and wicks away from the top where your piggy's lay.

Wow, that is fantastic. Do you know if you need towels underneath as well? Or would you say a layer of newspaper and then vetbed on top?
